Foolishly just switched to talktalk from sky. Must say sky have been great but were getting expensive, switched to talktalk assuming all broadband was provided by BT and ultimately all gets the same speed roughly.
Prior to switch I was getting about 4.5Mb download according to speedtest.net.
After the switch I get
I've phoned talktalk and been told they can't even make changes because the line can't handle them sending a message to my router!
Now I'm tied to an 18 month contract!!!
My advice whatever you do don't switch to talktalk.

Plusnet are great for speed (I get fibre from them)0 -
This is my experience with TalkTalk: I was forced to move to them as part of the Virgin Media customer ditching exercise earlier this year. My download speed dropped from a deplorable 1.5 mb to a absolutely scandalous 0.8 mb! On top of that, my broadband connection was constantly going down, much more so than with Virgin. After a couple of months I'd had enough, so I moved to BT. They promised me up to 30mb. "How on earth can you do that?", I asked, given that all the companies use the same infrastructure. "Ah!" said the call centre clerk. "We get preferential use of the fibre connections, so while we can't put a fibre right to your door, at least we can get you a fibre connection from the green box in the street to the exchange. TalkTalk can't do that. With them, it's copper all the way to the Exchange." So I moved to BT, and low and behold I now have about 30 mb!
If you can't get fibre to your door, it seems to me that you should be with BT. It certainly worked for me.0 -
what a load of rubbish !
talk talk , like most other providers , do the basic ADSL setup AND the fibre setup , like others (non virgin) it is available as a "up to" 39 meg and a "up to" 78meg
and yes IT IS fibre to the cabinet
BT salesperson convinced you?0 -

Well if you know so much about it, why was I on less than 1 mb with TT and then 30 mb with BT?0 -
maybe because you were on a basic ADSL line with virgin and then talk talk , now you are on a fibre setup.
there is NO adsl setup that can exceed 17meg , even if you live next door to the exchange
and re reading your post again
""Ah!" said the call centre clerk. "We get preferential use of the fibre connections, so while we can't put a fibre right to your door, at least we can get you a fibre connection from the green box in the street to the exchange." *****
so has fibre been installed?
from memory virgin media only did a basic ADSL setup via a phone line
**** the BT sales person whilst referring to "fibre to the door" was in fact referring to "proper" virgin , (the one that gives you tv) and runs thru a separate cable to your house0 -
Enlarging on the explanation from the BT sales guy - apparently there are both fibre and copper lines from the cabinet to the exchange. BT could put me on a fibre line, but for whatever reason, neither TT nor Virgin could. BT get first dibs according to the sales guy. BT have recently upgraded my area. There are "Superfast Fibre is now here" or similar words emblazoned on the cabinets. I live on a very large, and rapidly expanding, estate so it would seem to make sense that fibre is limited, and if it is, I can well understand that BT get some sort of priority.
As far as I'm concerned, my Broadband speed and reliability have improved dramatically since I moved to BT. My only regret is that I didn't do it years ago.
One more thing - I'm on a special deal for 12 months. The sales guy said at the end of it I'll be able to move to another special deal. I guess he was lying, but we'll see.0 -
sorry , I think you are not understanding what I wrote
ADSL , = upto 17meg (in your case between 0.8- 1.5 dependent on supplier, or quality of modem)
this is the basic system that has been used for a few yrs , and was the offered service to potential virgin customers that were not in a virgin cabled area
fibre to cabinet , is fibre from the exchange to the green box , it then changes to a phone wire to your house , before going into a different type of modem than ADSL , this is available in 2 flavours , upto 39 and upto 79 meg (approx.)
virgin cable b/band , a virgin cable that runs to your house and allows broadband speeds of upto 150 meg
I think the deal that BT have done is to give you a deal where you get fibre for the first "x" mths at the lower ADSL cost
I think after the deal finishes (or the offer mths) the price will jump substantially
just to add , if you are on fibre , then 30 meg is NOT a good connection speed , and is probably only 75% of the advertised speed
I think the guy at BT lied to you regarding talk talk not being able to do fibre to the cabinet , he lied to you about virgin , because as you know virgin (non cable) is now dead and transferred to TT ,
why not go to talk talks website and enter your post code , and see if fibre IS available , as they use BT cables and fibre?0 -

Here is a post of mine from about 6 months ago where I stated the download speeds I was getting and these haven't changed since then.
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=67675342&postcount=12I'm on "standard" internet with AOL and even though the package states up to 17Mb, I regularly get 18Mb+ (checked with many online speedtesters and I once had an Openreach engineer at my house fixing a phone fault and he checked the
speed and it was 18.5Mb at the time).
I am only about 100 metres from the internet cabinet which certainly helps.0 -
ok , however according to gingerbob "So I moved to BT, and low and behold I now have about 30 mb!"
and as 2 previous ADSL(2) suppliers only managed to get a max of 1.5 meg to his property via the phone line , I think we must assume that the gingerbob is now using fibre to the cabinet to get 30 meg now
and this speed would be the same if supplied by talk talk or any other fibre to the cabinet supplier0 -
I checked the price I'm paying for the BT deal and it's comparable to what TT and Virgin charge - at least for the first 12 months!
I have to ask the question though, why do Virgin and TT not put people on the fastest connection available? Do they want to lose customers or something? Maybe for Virgin the answer was 'yes'.0
