If we're talking about impressing the customers I'm pretty sure the customers will be wowed more if the OP rolled up in an M3 instead of a berlingo

Well, you lasted 12 posts before you mentioned it. Well done DM101.
  • Thanks guys. Some great advice & alternatives. Budget is dependent on some decisions I'm making over the next few weeks so either around the £2k mark if I opt for the old & finance free option. Or if I go the other way I could go for a nearly new & bank on it lasting a long time.

    Risks either way really!

I own a BM and am happy with the performance from the 90 bhp 1.6 HDi power unit.

Btw, it's not the oil that is the issue, it's the no. 3 injector. It works loose and needs re-torqing every 10,000 miles to avoid the turbo getting coked-up and failing.
Also, using branded fuel helps to keep the injectors clean.

The Police tend to use Zafiras as dog carries as they are well-suited to the task due to the rear seats folding flat into the floor and the middle seats can be moved forward to create a massive boot spave more than capable of holding the biggest dog cage.

As for repairs. I had the con2000 unit fail recently (common fail item). Cost £45 for replacement unit and £60 for the garage to fi it.
The garage will send off for a repair kit that will allow them to repair the old unit ready for the next customer who needs one. Cost of repair kit ? £5.

By coincidence I bought a Berlingo today.

07 plate, 29k, one family owned from new.

    £1000.

It is a 1.4 petrol Forte model.

It is actually a lot nicer to drive than I expected and with no complicated Diesel engine to worry about.

Strangely the Insurance is more than the 116D that it is replacing?

    Go figure.
  • I'm going Berlingo shopping next week. Sounds like you got a good deal at £1k.

I'm looking at diesel mainly because in my price range no petrols I can find in my part of the world have done less than about 90k miles. If one comes up within a reasonable distance though I'd definitely consider if mileage was decent.

I'll save around £300 on insurance on a 1.6 diesel compared to what I'm paying now on my tiny 1.2 petrol hyundai.

Seems like a bargain. You should get your moneys worth. Was it a private sale?

Yes a private sale but it was owned by a good mate from new.

Due to the issues with the 1.6HDi engine I would avoid them to be honest.

Earlier ones had the 1.9XUD engine I believe and that would be a much better bet.

I can't give you an idea on fuel consumption yet but Inknow it got mid 40's to the gallon on a fully loaded trip to Devon a few months ago.

I will update when I do my first brim to brim calculation.

From memory the two petrol engines are a 1.4 (actually 1360cc) and a 1.6.

The cambelt interval on the 1.4 is 75/80k or 10yrs going by the slightly confusing service book.

    They are actually very comfortable.

The first ever episode of new Top Gear featured a review of an Berlingo, you can find it online on Putlocker I think, or it might have been Coke&Popcorn.

The petrol engine in mine is very quiet, pity it doesn't have AirCon but it has big windows!!
  • We have a Kangoo 2 1.6 petrol auto, the car version and specifically bought it as we wanted a decent van based car to carry our dogs. Its like a tardis, is quite decent to drive, even on motorways, and our dogs have a lovely large area behind the front seats. I fitted a Barjo dog gate so the rear hatch can be kept open when parked up and the dogs still kept cool. There is a decent aircon and its very comfortable.

Its a 2010 model, so not in the £1000 range quite yet, and of course its French. But most of these little van derived cars seem to have a French heritage. Touch wood its had low running costs and flew through the past 2 MOTs with no advisories. There are a cohort of anti-French vehicle posters here, not sure why. Vauxhalls and other marques seem to have just as many issues when you get a bad one.

Hope you find a decent Berlingo car-type van, don't discount the Kangoo or Peugeot Partner. Loads of dog people have them for good reason!

I had looked at the Kangoo a year or so ago.

There where loads of 3yr old ex Motability Petrol Autos at CarGiant for silly money.

    Even had AirCon from memory.

    A good functional little vehicle.
