  • Not your usual suggestions DM. What about a BMW, Audi, or a Yaris?

I decided to take a turn and provide only mature and sensible suggestions

I have an 11 year old Berlingo van with 90k miles, and it's just about ready for the scrappy.

Admittedly it's had a hard life, being a Forestry Commision vehicle before I had it, but in the last couple of years I've had to replace the clutch and rear axle (which are comminish issues) as well as a myriad of smaller bits (alternator, fuel pump)

If you can find a Multispace thats been looked after then you might be OK, but I think you'll going to need to have a reasonable maintenance budget.

Do VW do a domesticated version of their Caddy van?
  • There is the VW Touran. I still don't fully understand why the OP is discounting the Volvo V70, which also suits her needs. I don't think any MPV derived van will look more 'professional' to a customer than compared to a V70. Doing 12-15k miles a year and at times carrying 5 people you will prefer something more comfortable.

You have completely overlooked the fact that the vehicle will be carrying dog cages.

And they will be getting taken in and out depending on usage.

A long estate car will be completely impractical for this. You are unlikely to be able to fit them in the rear doors which means dragging them the length of the car.

However a van based MPV with wide sliding doors on each side and a high roof will be more than up to the task. And means you can carry more dogs.

Yes, the Caddy Maxi Life is a seven seater version of the Caddy while the Combi commercial model is a five seater version still with panels for the rear of the van. They tend to be pricey though and I'm assuming based on the OP's requirement for age and mileage their budget is fairly low.

A van is a commercial vehicle and can look more professional on that basis and the vans offer a lot more space, particularly height which makes them considerably more flexible particularly when carrying bigger dogs.

If we're talking about impressing the customers I'm pretty sure the customers will be wowed more if the OP rolled up in an M3 instead of a berlingo

Car fans might be impressed with an M3. Dog owners would wonder where their dogs will sit.
  • Just compared rear boot space of the V70 and Berlingo multi space and the latter is only 50 litres bigger. But it has the height advantage for the dog cage.

My parents had a 2004 Partner (2.0 HDI) and now have a 2012 Partner Tepee (1.6 HDI) and they are ok. They have stuck with them as my dad is a mechanic for Peugeot so parts and the tech to repair them is inexpensive for him.

Their 2004 they had from 12 months old, I think he replaced a clutch on it and that's about it, but he did use it to pull their caravan to the far ends of france and back most summers.

They are enourmous inside, and for dogs have a flat entry to the boot (was great for our old collie who got shaky in his old age). The entry was a little high though so they had to buy steps for him...

There is room for 4 adults easily, they are a little cramped for shoulder space for 5 adults.

As an alternative option, what about something like a Galaxy, where you could remove rear seats for dogs?
