To access the control panel press the Windows key and X, that'll bring up a small menu in the lower left corner (not a Charms menu) and you can select it from there.
Oh yes it has, for many users full W10 install files have been downloaded to a hidden directory:

The laptop seems to be working fine now so a big thank you to BedsitBob and bsod. Bit annoying not to know what caused the problems but it seems fixed now.
Just out of interest I checked Windows Update History - there have been 45 attempts to Upgrade to Windows 10 starting on 2nd August up to 13th September. There weren't any attempts on 8 days but some days there were 2 attempts. They all failed possibly because I have not registered/reserved Windows 10?
I have to say I was flabbergasted to see that, I didn't even know!
I also had 1 important & 7 optional updates (this is after already installing automatic updates a few minutes earlier). I checked them first and one was KB3058168 - "Update that enables Windows 8.1 & 8 KMS hosts to activate Windows 10". I haven't installed that one.
I also changed the settings to check for updates and let me choose whether to download and install them and it now states "you're set to automatically check for updates".
I've not made my mind up about Windows 10 yet and I don't want it installed without my consent. If there were problems during or after installation like some people are experiencing I don't think I could sort them out, hence my reluctance.

Oh God - I feel so thick. My/our stuff is saved in "This PC, Documents" on the laptop and the stick thing - is that OK then?
Any recommendations for the external hard drive?0 -
I've got to go now but, as always, any advice is appreciated.
Have I done the correct thing with the windows updates?0 -
yes, if one fails, you've got the other
anything big enough (at least the same capacity as your hard disk). shop around too
