windows defender is an antivirus, but it's not as good as avast
a backup would help resolve a situation like this in future, system restores don't always work - macrium reflect freeDon't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -
So which is best? Shall I ditch Avast and enable Defender? Or is that debate best left for another day?
Personally I'm fed up of the pop ups from Avast saying you need to update but when you click they just want to flog the paid for version.
I used to have Comodo (free) on the old laptop.0 -
Personally, I use AVG.
It doesn't slow my computers down, updates itself quietly in the background, and only draws attention to itself, when it needs a computer restart.0 -
Hi bsod
Sorry you posted while I was composing. I will look into the macrium reflect free. I have read about it on here but never had the confidence to do it. I have my recovery disks and I've backed up my documents etc on a USB Flash Drive. I'm really out of touch since not working - I used to be able to pick the IT guy's brains.0 -
Cross posted again. So I will stick with Avast not Defender and I will look into Macrium Reflect free.
Thank you everyone. Bob, sorry for taking so much of your Sunday up.

changing antivirus to something inferior because of a popup once a year would be a backward step, you're getting a product for free, it's not much of a burden
the other popups can be turned of in 4 clicks

you need a (£30-40) portable hard disk, choose the system (image this disk) option, then update with differential backups periodicallyDon't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -
Thank you bsod I will do/look into that/these.0

There's a bit of confusion out there regarding the Windows 10 installation. It downloads the installer update not Windows 10 itself. If you haven't reserved your copy you have to manually install it via the icon in the corner.
To access the control panel press the Windows key and X, that'll bring up a small menu in the lower left corner (not a Charms menu) and you can select it from there.0
