You can buy the box from ebay and pair it, the card obviously has to come from sky.

You can often pick one up from one of the Freecycle or Facebook type groups. If you want to watch the Sky channels on it you will need to pay the multi room subscription.

If buying from Ebay, read the full entry carefully, as I once noticed some , which had the hard drives removed (multiple seller).

Thanks Carrot, so Sky wont mind me sourcing my own, and i just get a new card from them in the post? (which adds to my bill each month I assume)

Yeah they will send you a new card if you subscribe. it's a lot easier to source your own now as you can pait it to a card online, you used to have to ring up and get them to do it (but it was always alowed).

And yes as other people say, be sure to get one with a HD still in unless you want to source your own!

Sky often have discounts on extra boxes eg the very expensive 2TB box (loads of extra storage) for 49 pounds inclusive so probably worth giving Sky a call rather than just assume fleabay will be cheaper. Obviously multi room will be extra regardless of where you source the box.

  • I got one from a Sky van who was setting up a neighbour, £25, less than a year old. Worth asking if you see a Sky engineer around.

That has all the hallmarks of a legitimate purchase!
  • Sometimes boxes sold on Ebay come with the veiwing card, and thus should work as a "freeview" box - but obviously will not pick up Sky subscription channels. I bought a second box intending to do this - but found another way that suits us better.

Bought a loft amplifier/distribution box, ran coax from RF2 out on the back of my HD box to the amplifier, connected the amplifier to the remote TV's with a "magic eye" into the back of the TV. For some reason the remote TV's see the signal from the Sky box as analogue, but via the magic eye we have full control of the Sky box from the remote TV's!

Only thing is, you can only watch 1 Sky channel, so if wife wants to watch something else on one of the remotes, one of us has to use Sky, the other Freeview.
