Right, I work for a bank as an underwriter, and used to work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9.30-14.30, and Saturday 12.30 - 22.00.

It has been getting more and more difficult with Ryan's behavioural issues to find suitable childcare during school holidays. Now he has a diagnosis, it will be even trickier, and to be honest, I don't want to put him through the stress and upheaval any more.

Also, because I'm still breastfeeding, and Natasha wont accept expressed milk or formula, I can't be out of the house for 10.5 hours (including travelling time) on a Saturday any more.

Obviously, most people tend to want to work weekdays, so, to try and be as fair to them as possible, and solve the problems I have, I asked to do 2 evenings (any 2 of Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur), and Saturday day (not too bothered what hours, but only 6 hours, not 9.5 hours).

They usually expect a certain percentage of your shift to be what they call 'unsociable hours' (evenings/weekends), so I thought I had been pretty fair volunteering to do 100% unsociable hours....

The problem is, apparently, that the shifts I have requested are not a match for any of the managers shifts (my old shifts weren't either, but that seems to have escaped their notice).

So, they have told me the options are to do at least one day (but then there's the school holiday issue), or to do evenings but start at 4pm (can't because Stu isn't home by then), or do all day Saturday (can't whilst still breastfeeding, but if I'm doing 2 evenings, I want to balance that by having time with my family at the weekends....Ryan used to cry when I went to work on a Saturday knowing he wouldn't see me all day, and it used to break my heart).

Anyway, I was very polite and said that whilst I understood their position, I wasn't able to agree to any of the options. So she has gone away to have another talk to the manager who deals with the shift patterns, and will ring me back tomorrow.

If they can't find suitable hours for me, I will have to try and find something else.

I have just been looking and there are quite a few school administrator type jobs around, which would be ideal as they are mainly term time. Natasha would have to go to nursery, but I think she would enjoy it, as she is a sociable little thing, in a way that Ryan never was.

    Phew....there you go.....:o

Anyway, get a bloody move on woman, I need my bed :rotfl:

I say that, but I usually don't end up with what I wanted. And sleeping in the spare bed as well...

  • Snags,
As a friend, I think it's probably for the best. Ryan and Natasha still 'need' you and it won't always be like that...Enjoy it while you can...

I don't think a tribunal would be an option, because they haven't really done anything wrong - it's me that is asking for a change of hours, and if they can't accomodate them and can show there is a genuine business reason, there isn't much I can do. I don't feel cross about it (which is probably why I should leave...lol), although perhaps a bit niggled that they implied I wasn't willing to meet them half way (I genuinely thought I was doing that by offering to cover shifts that no-one else wanted.....).

You're right, filthy, but only occasionally smutty ;)

We dont have a spare bed, but I do have a DH on nights, so I get the bed all to myself :T

Snaggles, you need to do what is right for Ryan and Natasha hun. You will manage financially if you decide the hours arent right for you ;)

google? Knowing your rights and them being scared that you may know more than them helps.... 10.5 hours for breastfeeding mother probably an easy one to argue....
they can only reasonably decline family flex. if you did it when managers didn't work before it may not be reasonable to deny it on that basis - nor if *anyone* else is doing it
But !!!!!! - why does a mortgage underwriter need to work on a saturday night???

Don't rush into anything - think long and hard:
Term time only is a big loss in salary
Wait until you know the support level the boy will be getting - there maybe a specialist childcare options.
If hubby is looking for a new job you won't know his hours or work patterns - he might end up with something that conveniently fits in.
