BT line confusion

Hi,
I've just moved, and need to choose which broadband provider to go for, and it's between Plusnet and Virgin. With Plusnet, I need a BT line (I'm in an NTL cabled area, so Virgin is no problem). Does this mean I need to be paying line rental to BT or someone, or do I just need the physical cables going there? Like the BT boxes.
