Do i have to cancel or can i just pay to let old B/band run

Options
Hi all.

Sorry if the answer to this is obvious, but bear with me....

We are about to move house - want to take up SKY TV & also change from BT to SKY for Phone & Bband.

We still have a couple of months left on the BT contract - as long as i am prepared to pay for this to run till the end (ie. pay for both companies) am i ok to just leave it and Sky will take over or have i missed something?

Thanks as always

Your contract never expires, only your minimum term does, so you need to give notice to BT before you move, unless you want the incoming occupier to have a working service at your expense, with potentially unlimited bills. Normal notice period is 15 to 30 days depending on your contract. You'll be charged an ETC for the remaining value left on the minimum term.
You'll need to order Sky once you move into the new property. Puzzled as to how you think Sky can 'take it over', as it's a different line?
Your only other option to avoid the ETC is to transfer BT over to the new property, which will start you on a new minimum term.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • thanks macman....

well, I've been with BT for so long that I hadn't realised what happens if you want to end a contract - I feel like i'm caught between a rock & a hard place!

am presuming i'm paying less to cancel now with not long to run on the contract than if I moved with bt & then cancelled?

apparently they charge £30.00 to 'stop' broadband on a line whether you're in a contract or not!

Perhaps the OP wants to keep their old phone number ? (probably not possible if they are moving miles away).
  • hi, no I don't want to keep old number - I was talking about taking over the line in the new house. I had phoned Sky to try to do this to start after we had moved in, but could not do that.

On another note, after cancelling with BT I checked my account, t&c's etc and found that I have been charged for BT Sport since June!!!! We have never ordered this, it's insane! They are refunding, but how on earth does this happen??
