higher speed broadband - worth it?

Hi. I'm not tech savvy and would value some advice please. The pavements have been dug up of late, and BT called saying we could upgrade our broadband. My rule of thumb is "never be sold anything", at least without a little research!
Current setup:
- BT customers for line rental, anytime phone and unlimited broadband.
- Happy with the service.
- line rental £159.84 annually
- unlimited broadband £17.00 per month. Download speed 12Mb/s and we use 110-170GB per month.
- anytime phone, £7.45 per month. We make about 100 calls per month using this.
Total annual cost = £454 per year
What we are being offered:
- 18 month contract
- new BT homehub 5
- faster unlimited broadband £23 per month, 40Mb/s
- total annual cost £530 plus a £6.99 delivery charge.
Is this good? Is it expensive? Do I need faster broadband? We do seem to have a problem with 5 in the house if all using devices sometimes things grind to a halt. Might this improve?
Cheers

4k tv will be streamed over broadband rather than over the air so your are future proofing
