I am reinstalling Windows XP on a Pc.
I have a CD with windows updates for Service Pack 3 (SP3).
Do I need to install service pack SP1 or SP2, before installing SP3 from the CD ?
I thought each service pack was standalone and had everything it needed that went before.
I saw following, which says you need SP1 or SP2.

Any reason not to install Windows 7 ?0

the way I understood it back in the XP days was , all updates (to date) were issued as a service pack (1) , then later all updates (to date) were issued as service pack (2) etc etc
so service pack 3 contains ALL updates from xp,s manufacture
so installing SP3 should cover everything UPTO sp30 -
I would highly recommend using Windows 7.
Windows XP is not massively supported by a lot of major software companies these days, which means you will likely have issues trying to run new versions of software.
Windows 7 is easily available at a reasonable price, and a low spec machine can run it at 32 bit configuration without much issue, as long as it's not being used for extensive tasks such as video editing or high end gaming.Total Debt Left: £14,843 / £23,954

NHS just updated their PC's from XP to 7.
As their machines were not compatible or good enough to run 7.
Anyway, get Windows 7. Much better.0 -
You can run Windows 7 comfortably on a P4. I have.0

Not sure what you are saying but this does not make sense.0 -
the question was about service packs for win xp , not awaiting suggestions as per changing his OS , he may have old software or machinery that only uses xp0

I have a couple of machines running XP (for old equipment purposes, as said). From memory I installed the OS, then SP1 (?1a) then SP3.
I seem to think there was something on the earlier packs that was needed to make SP3 install properly. It's a while since I did the install tho, and as I has the earlier pack I used it anyway.0 -
To clarify.
First question is, what Service Pack is the XP install disk?
Do you have SP3 as a stand alone on the cd?Move along, nothing to see.0
