Even calculating that my rent now has been the same over 20 years (it hasn`t, it has often been less) the amount is negligible, about as much as some posters on here will get for their new-builds after the bust proper. What point were you trying to reach for?
20 years ago you could have bought for £65k and paying what you have in rent you would now own outright.

The amount of 'negligible' rent you've paid in 20 years is around £84k to live in a series of cash in hand flats, shared houses, HMO's and rooms above shops and you own 0% of nothing.

Forget new builds, Aberdeen, and interest only mortgages - they're just trees blocking your view of the woods.

Have lived in about five different towns and cities in that time though, and contrary to what the "Just rent it out" brigade say, getting tenants in can be a nightmare (I did that when I owned originally and moved 200 odd miles away, bought for much less than 65k though) Bottom line is that the bubble was in full swing before I even thought about buying again, and so here we are, but being flush with cash helps to soothe any worries I may have about not owning a very ordinary tenement flat. Like many on here you are just fixated on owning property without considering the flexibility that other options can bring ( not to mention the downsides of a broken housing market due to a massive unsustainable price bubble)

This is one I lived in a while back, my room was above the window to the right (not a shop in sight!) The makeover was done after we left though, but it was still a nice environment to spend a few years saving and investing. Actually you are starting to sound quite angry Wotsit, are you feeling okay?

If you need to move around then renting can be a viable option but that is not your only argument In fact you haven't mentioned living in 5 different towns and city's before not sure that isn't a bit more fiction from you.

Rent no increased for 20 years although all properties are lovely.
  • Hey crashy instead of arguing unproveable points I would appreciate your considered response to my post where I answered your questions. I'm genuinely interested to learn your views on what I might have done differently plus it took me ages to type all that on this thing
Left is never right but I always am.

I said similar sized flat to this one was 350 p.m in 97/98, and this one is 50 p.m more than that now, 50 p.m increase on the similar sized flats, but many different flats/houses in between, but some were shared so sometimes around 330 p.m to live there. No fiction just facts, the main point being that on basic Edinburgh flats there has been hardly any rental increase in many years.
