Phoned in this morning to ask for a medical note for this week off and the lady receptionist says I can't have one?! Never had a problem before and im still unwell. How comes? This ain't helping my IBS and putting more stress on me as it is....

This whole post just shouts 'I'm entitled.... '.

How do you expect the receptionist to know your ailment and be familiar with how unwell you may be? The practice will have thousands of patients. They are not just there waiting for your call you know.

What are you doing to address the root cause - your IBS - or are you intending to just never go to work again?

You should be working with your GP to find ways to manage your condition so that your life can regain some normality; not just seek to get sick notes every two weeks for the foreseeable.

Thanks everyone just that the receptionist was abit off with me and they are supposed to be a caring profession. My doctor knows Im ill but could he not give me one if he wanted too even though im ill? It worry's me!

It isn't up to the receptionist to issue a "sick note", it is up to you to book an appointment to see a doctor, who will then decide if you need a medical certificate or not.;)

Make an appointment to get another sick note or ask for a telephone consultation, they may issue one for you to collect. Some receptionists think they are God!

It isn't a blooming supermarket, the doctor has to judge if a patient really needs a "sick note".

DR receptionists do FAR more than just answer phones and make appointments. OP in your case it seems that as you have been off sick for 2 months and the last fit note issued was only for 2 weeks that your GP has recorded on your notes that you would have to be seen before a further fit note is issued. A fit note is an official document and your GP has guidelines to follow.

See your GP. i have a long standing on going medical issue but if i needed a fit note i'd see my GP and not rely on a receptionist (who i woudnt have thought could issue them anyway)

It sounds like the GP needs to see you before deciding whether to issue one. Have you seen a doctor recently?

This was always the case at my old GP surgery.

  • I have had this attitude from the surgery before because I've been frank when I've phoned up "My sick note has run out and I'm still very unwell with X".

"well we can't just give you another sick note... the doctor will need to see you...!".

Yep, understood but since they generally ask why I'm trying to make the appointment or ask for their triage system that is the reason why just as much as needing to see the doctor for the health issue behind it.

As long as she set you up with an appointment or a telephone call from the doctor depending on their system then I wouldn't worry too much.

    We all know that;

those patients aren't going to annoy themselves, or be rude to themselves are they,

there is also a bit of gossip to be getting on with about Mrs Smith from down the road's bunions,

and the cup of tea for the GP wont make itself either.

Yeah, if you can get to see your GP that is. The OP knows whether she is well enough to return back to work, it is a bit like ATOS... GP's don't always get it right!
