Leak under sink, what will seal it until I can get a PLumber in?

Dishwasher went away for repair last week, now we find we have a leak under sink so we can't use for washing dishes, we think the pipework was disturbed as the dishwasher was removed.

Is there anything we can buy from B&Q that will seal the pipes (so we can use the sink ) until we can get a plumber in?

  • Normally you'd just make sure the pipes are connected properly. Some joints are simply push together, some are screwed together, check they're all tightened correctly.

if it's the spigot that the DW hose was attached to then you can block off the spigot with a cork/bottle stopper as a temporary fix.

There are that many variations of the connection it's not possible to point you to an exact fix :(

Have you absolutely no sense of curiosity. Put a small amount of water in the sink. Let it go and have a look at where it is coming out. It will rapidly become apparent how to stop the leak, even if only temporarily.
It is no use coming on here and saying there's a leak under my sink. and expecting some mind reader to tell you where it is coming from and how to fix it.
At the very least, take a photo Then someone might be able to help.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

27col pretty much describes the only way to find out where the leak is coming from, and you need that to work out how to fix it.

Put a bowl under the sink to catch the drips and fill the sink.

It's not a job that should generally require a plumber, as it could be something that will take 30 seconds and you tightening something by hand to fix (most under sink waste pipework is hand tightened and really easy to fix*).
At worst a new washer or a bit of PTFE tape (anything from 15p for some types of washer/seal, to about £2 for a roll of PTFE) is likely to be needed, asuuming it's not just the entry point for the dishwashers waste that needs to be stoppered (IIRC if it's a screw on entry point you can get plastic blanks for about a pound).

*I had to dismantle our bottle trap and take it completely off the other day to deal with a blockage, it took far longer to empty under the sink so I could put a drip catching bowl in than to fully remove and put the trap back (cleaning the trap and pipework however took about an hour)

No, funny, I never, ever, thought of doing that!;)

I have tried all of the above, obviously, I bought new seals and some of the tape mentioned, but the leak persists and the new seals (which were the only ones b&Q had, didn't actually do the job, nor did the tape.

I wondered if there was a spray on sealant or higher grade tape available until I can get someone in who can sort it out.

It's a silicone plumbing leak sealer but it sets to a firm gel, rather than completely solid like normal silicone so you can reopen joints etc

But I wouldn't paste it on the outside, I'd open the joint, smear plenty around any sealing washers, o rings, tighten up then leave to set.

Are you sure you inserted the seals on the sink plastic pipework the correct way round (pointy edge outward?)

Is the leak from the supply or waste? From a joint, a hole or what?
  • no one knows :rotfl::rotfl:
