Yes that's exactly why I need to know whose direct debits are whose! the key words are 'ex husband'. We are separating and I need to prove which DD's are his as he's denying having any from our joint account.

I'm with smile - they have very limited information, some of the DD's just have reference numbers and no company names.

I've just looked at the direct debit website, do you think I can ask for the original Direct Debit Instruction as this would show more information?

    Many thanks in advance

Why were you left with a joint account after divorce? What does your solicitor say about it?

If your account is in credit, you can close it any time you like. If it is overdrawn, or if you don't want to close it, you can tell the bank there is a dispute and they will then only make payments if both parties agree. This could get costly as you will be liable for any failed payment charges.

I any case, however, you should know what payments you have to make, for things such as
    - council tax
    - gas, water, electricity
    - insurances
    - TV licence
    - etc.

All you have to do is contact the payees and tell them of your divorce, your new name and address if applicable, and the sort code and account number of your new bank account.

Your solicitor, and possible your local CAB, should be able to help you further if you are stuck.
  • Colsten, I'm trying to separate. I need to know this information for the financial agreement.

It maybe fairly difficult to work out who set them up - but it should be more straightforward to resolve them going forward.

Go through the statement and decide which ones you need to keep and which your ex needs to take on. So whoever keeps the house pays gas / electric / council tax etc.

The only area I can think of that might cause difficulty would be things like mobile phones, if they are both on one account. If they are on different accounts then again it should be easy to work out from your bills who should take responsibility for it.

Cancel all of them, and then set up the things you know you need DDs for again (i.e. contact your phone company, gas, electric, mortgage and give them your new bank details).

It would be sensible to contact everyone and change the details first, and then cancel them though to avoid any missed payments.

Super Han has it spot on.
Cancel the d/d open a new sole account for you then put the joint account in dispute ie blocked!

I think the only way to do this is as follows:
Each direct debit will be identified by the name of the payee. If for example there is a direct debit to BT, then you will have to look at the phone bill to see whose name it is in. If the phone bill is in his name, then it is his dd and his responsibility. If it is in your name, then it is your dd and your responsibility. If it is in joint names then it is your joint responsibility.
With the exception of utility bills/council tax etc other dd's will be personal. You can easily tell if it is your credit card or his credit card etc.
DD''s that you honestly know are not yours must be his.

Sorry but I think this is the only way

It might be one way, if you can actually lay your hands on the bills.

SuperHan's way is faster and more reliable, as long as the OP still has access to the joint account.

I own a joint account with my ex husband. How do I find out which direct debits are in his name and which are in mine? I have asked my bank but they haven't been too helpful as they can only provide a list of direct debits linked to the account and not whose name they are in or the names of the companies that the money goes out to.

Any info would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

Why don't you speak to the companies direct.

How's that possible if the companies are unknown?
