Some of these new dpf diesel can throw some serious wobbler's and trundling down the hard shoulder at 25mph with a dpf issue is not fun.
I've considered that but it's got 220k on it. It's got a turbo and injector fault, needs a new cam belt, plus multiple other niggling faults.
It's coming to the end of it's life and even if I don't replace it now it'll need it in the near future.
At this point I'm not prepared to pay potentially huge sums on fixing a 13 yo car.
Yes I'm aware of the fragility of modern Diesels, hence my OP.
To clarify, my car needs replacing. I need a Focus sized car that will be good for occasional long distance commuting and will last a few years without bankrupting me. It doesn't have to be Diesel but having driven them for 15 years I'm used to the midrange grunt.0 -

Yes, difficult to go back to a small petrol after that.0 -
Absolutely no problem, if you do have work all over the place, you either stick with what you have got, the simplest solution, or buy a 1.8 petrol Vectra. Easily available for under £1000, the rough cost of getting a second hand, someone elses problem, "cheap" diesel repaired to decent order.0

I'll certainly give it some thought0

I said that they were closer to US standards of panel fit / shut lines - not that they were poorly built.Where do you get the idea that Korean cars are built poorly?
And that particular quote came from the manufacturer themselves...
As I say - they are "honest" cars - any penny pinching isn't in areas that'll leave you stranded at 3am in the morning... You might need a micrometer to see it...0 -

I'm interested in anyone's views on these choices. I recall the Ford 1.6 was a bit of a ticking time bomb. Have those issues been resolved? Are there any known issues with the Korean cars? The 7 year Kia warranty is very attractive.
It's a good thing to have but you need to read it in full.
An extract from Kia's warranty :-
This document explains the terms & exclusions for three relevant separate warranties that apply to our current range of cars, as below:
• Basic Warranty
• Anti-Perforation Warranty
• Parts Warranty
In particular these exclusions:-
Normal deterioration
• Normal wear, tear or deterioration such as discolouration, fading or deformation
• Surface corrosion on any part other than the sheet metal panels on the exterior body
• Gradual wearing of mechanical components in proportion to mileageForgotten but not gone.0
