Help and advice regarding PPI claims

Hi there, forgive me as I am new to this but wanted to ask for your advice, over the years I have had many loans and approached my bank about this previously as I recall having PPI on some of them, my bank advised that it wasn't with them and I obviously couldn't claim so I left it, however, I received a phonecall from a company today advising that I was due a PPI refund from a loan I once had, he called me be my maiden name and knew my previous address (ie where I lived when I took out the loan) he advised they take 25% as I don't have any of the information required to pursue this, I had a loan in 2001/2002 , 2004 and another in 2007/2010. My question is, can I pursue this as I don't have any paperwork as proof ? I also visited my bank today and they said that they only keep records up to 7 years and cannot provide me with any info also the company I got the loans from was Northern Rock that have now gone bust, would I be able to pursue this independently as I cannot recall the amount I borrowed or if it was a joint or single loan, my husband and I (both clearly senile) cannot remember. Since my last loan with them I have got married and moved house so know I will have a lot of identification to show but I am not sure how to even begin.
Thanks in advance

Whoever phoned you was just getting business.
Do not touch them with a barge pole.

Send a Sar request to your bank, this will cost £10. Ask for all information that they hold on you.Give as much info as you can to help them find you, Address, DOB, etc.
There is a chance they may not find you, I think it is worth £10 just so you know for sure.

Contact Northern Rock and see if they can find you, if they say no, send a Sar request, as above.

    That is fraud.
he called me be my maiden name and knew my previous address (ie where I lived when I took out the loan)

Secured loans are on the registry and they can buy the data cheaply and then cold call people. That is why why used your maiden name. However, it has no info on PPI. That is just a guess on their part.

You are being told lies by a sales rep trying to earn a commission.

  • thank you for your reply, I did think it was a bit strange as only 50% of the info they had on me was correct, do you think it is something I will be able to pursue then? Do you know where I can begin ?
  • Hi there thank you so much for your reply, it took me ages to work out how to read them lol , sorry to ask but what is this 'sar' as my bank said they only have information up until 7 years ago and would not be able to help me nor will head office

A Sar is a request for all info that is held on you by the financial institution you ask.

Sometimes if you do a Sar, (if I am wrong someone will put me straight) this info is checked thoroughly, might be worth a try.
  • Morning all,
I tried to claim PPI for an old halifax credit card and was turned down last year. they have just written to me asking if I would like them to review it as they reached an agreement with Financial Conduct Authority about reconsidering peoples complaints. This came out of the blue. Had anyone else had this letter? Is it worth doing?

    Thanks for any help

Yes, there have been posters here who have had the letter. Some have taken them up on the offer. A couple got their decisions overturned. Although several still ended up with a rejection.

Whether its worth it or not will depend on your reasons for the complaint and whether the rejection was reasonable or not.

Why not? You've nothing to lose.
  • It doesn't matter if they only keep records for x amount of years. They will investigate a complaint regardless of when it was sold. If you have a list of all the addresses and surnames (married?) from around that time they should be able to find you unless this was decades and decades ago.
Just provide as much information as possible, and if you put the request in writing, head office have a far better chance at finding you than a telephony agent

They will investigate it, but if they have no records then their response will be to this effect and it then becomes the complainant's responsibility to provide them, How long records are kept is a matter of legitimate commercial judgement and varies from firm to firm, though six years is generally the minimum.
