  • Really appreciate your reply. I always check my way slips as I'm paid weekly and I was pretty sure I hadn't been overpaying to that extent.

I'll contact my employer again tomorrow and try and get this sorted.

Looks like in inputting the new tax code they over wrote your P45 information and deleted it.
  • I agree. Old employer called and told me defo sent it to hmrc and new employer has asked me to send them the p45. Clearly made the mistake but won't admit it. Nice.

Do you still have all three parts of your p45?
Have you had notice about tax code reduction from HMRC and how does it advise that it will be applied?
If you have not handed in your P45 the tax code pay and tax figures showing for your second week will have come from HMRC and the following week's new code of 1046L will also have come from HMRC.
    First regarding the tax codes
You are on a code a bit lower than standard code of 1060L so on 1046L you are paying about £28 a year more tax. Not a vast sum but worth checking if you do not know why it could be something from an old employment which has got carried forward and no longer applies.
    Second regarding the P45
If you have not yet handed in your P45 make sure you keep part 1A only parts 2 and 3 should go to the employer.
Keep an eye on your payslips your code should remain as 1046L and the P45 figures should be added to your earnings details.
When things run correctly if a P45 is received after HMRC has given details the P45 should not be used and should be destroyed by the employer. You are aiming to get your pay and tax details put back on not get the tax code changed, if the code is wrong then you need to contact HMRC to get it changed.
