Ink cartridges - original or compatible

Options
Hi all,

I need a bit of advice please. We've always bought original ink cartridges for our printer but since becoming debt-free DH and I refuse to spend any more £ than necessary so we can build our emergency fund quicker. Has any of you had any experience with the ink refills or compatible ones from Cartridge World/Cartridge Shop or any shop that sells such things. Where is the best place to buy these compatible ink cartridges (preferably ones where I can get cashbacks from quidco or tcb? Our printer has completely ran out of ink and it is much needed now that school has started. Your advice would be much appreciated.

    What printer do you have?
I had a Cannon that was absolutely fine with cheapie refilled cartridges (but warning: this was some years ago) My HP is a nightmare and I have given up trying to use anything other than originals as I waste more money than I try to save (but we do have a small stationery chain locally who do a good back-to-school deal)
If you tell us your printer, others may be able to advise based on their experience.
  • Hi thanks for your reply. Our printer is HP desk jet F2280 that uses HP 21 and 22.

I do know what you mean about money saving and I completely agree with you, but having used a HP at home and work I would strongly suggest you buy originals if you want the printer to work.

    Just my experience.
  • If it's for text documents, I'd suggest getting a cheap mono laser printer.

It'll be faster, cheaper per page, and the print won't smudge, if the paper gets a little damp.

I have used Cartridge Shop in the past. Quick delivery and cashback tracks fine each time.
My printer is an Epson inkjet and I use compatibles. Never had an issue with them
  • I've used cartridgesave in the past--not sure if they do any cashback but they are fast and competitively priced.

I've had similar experiences with HP printers not liking the compatible cartridges and doing things like coming up with a couple of days full of error messages and warnings about the 'counterfeit' cartridge (it isn't counterfeit because it is not claiming to be an HP cartridge and there is NOT a legal issue here). I gave up for the sake of my sanity and bought the originals for awhile but it has convinced me not to buy an HP printer again.

    HP dont like compatibles :(

Dont know if your printer is eligible but their monthly payment scheme is good value for money
  • Thanks all for your responses. It looks like HP originals is winning. I think I will order the originals from cartridgeshop and get some cashback. I have 12 empty cartridges to send to the recycling factory.com but haven't decided whether to go for the club card points (125 points per cartridge) or go for the monetary payment of £0.75 for the black (21) and £1.50 for the coloured (22).

I'm afraid that I agree, as that's 2 of us on here who have had the same experience.
We did as Bob suggests, and we got a mono laser, so now we have 2 (!) keeping the HP for photos, invitations etc.
