Printer inks really get my goat BIG TIME. All manufacturers sell cheap printers then when you go to buy replacement catridges, it cost nearly the same as the printer did. They put starter inks in, that run out very quickly, and claim the reason your printer rejects compatable inks is to protect your printer from inferior products that will damage your printer. The ink business is worth millions, they don't want your buying compatable inks, thats where they make their money.
This is my opinion only, some compatable inks are vastly better than other compatables. For instance Tesco sell compatables, which are fine and are virtually guaranted to work properly. I use Cartridge people , they send the inks from switzerland and take about a week, they have a UK number.

They sell originals and compatables. I have an old HP printer and it accepts the compatables fine and print quality is great.
On the other hand there are other companies that sell bad cartridges. that give poor results and quite often are rejected by the printer altogether.
Personally on principle alone i would buy compatable inks ( from a reputable company ). I think the big manufacturers charge ridiculous prices.
When my printer runs out of inks ( i have a few stockpiled ) I will be geting a new one, it has a problem feeding the paper in and sometimes I have to give it a helping hand.
I think i will buy one from one of the local computer shops. They sell printers that use single inks ( 4 inks ) they sell 4 compatable cartridges for £10, and if there is a problem they will refund or replace.
For me it's the principle, I cannot stand being taken for a mug by big companies.
Good luck whatever you decide0 -

Hence why I bought a cheap laser, which happily takes compatibles.
£40 for the printer, and £9-24 (including postage) for a ~1,000 page compatible cartridge. :cool:0 -
HP is a pain for 'compatible' cartridges, Epson ones used to need a chip resetter tool.
We have gone over to Cannon Pixma (several models). They accept chipped compatible cartridges (though not all are the same quality) and will cope with having existing cartridges re-filled if you take it carefully (they complain a bit, but work fine when you have cleared the messages!)
You can usually order (click/collect) ink for refilling from Tesco, thestores don't seem to keep it in stock any more0 -

Can I ask what make you have and where you buy your compatible ( spelt it right this time ) inks.
It is hard to find detailed info, on which printers are happy with compatibles. Cheers0 -
Yes indeed, I too was thinking about a laser printer. However some of my family like to print in colour.
There are also colour lasers, but I generally don't find the output matches the colour accuracy of inkjets for photos. Depends what you want the colour for I guess. I like my colour laser, and the toner lasts ages, although it's rather a big outlay each time it does need replacing. Something of a long term investment when you don't print lots. The upside of laser when you print infrequently however is that the toner doesn't dry out like ink does. I wasted a lot of money on cartridges that would just dry up from age.
Anyway, you home printer doesn't have to do all your printing needs. If I want to print photos, I use online photo printing services, or a local printing shop, both of which use far better printers than I could ever afford at home, and cost less per print than using a home machine anyway.0 -

I don't think I could go for a colour laser printer, the original outlay is too much. My children like to print colour things out .If i had a colour laser, they would go print crazy :rotfl:0 -

You could get both, and keep the colour inkjet just for when you want to print in colour. Can I ask what make you have and where you buy your compatible ( spelt it right this time ) inks.
