For what it's worth. Its a Nigerian bloke in the garage and hardly had any tools. And he wanted money for checking it afterwards too. Which was the time I just drove off. Can't tell me it costs £10 to check it after it's done lol. Checkings normally free.

    Regards

Yes some places may quickly check things for free but it's not a god given right for customers to receive free diagnosis from garages. Surely any fault finding would involve the mechanic having to drive the car onto a ramp, raise it, use tools or a torch to have a look around, drop the ramp and then drive it off again. Do you expect all of this time and equipment usage to be done for free?
  • One garage said it's weldable the broken exhaust and should cost £40-50. This guy said it's not and that he needs to order a new replacement part.
So go with the first garage, why did you bother going to another?

For the exhaust you need this kit and a set of cheap spanners.http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-Punto-1-2-8v-16v-Catalytic-converter-repair-flange-pipe-connector-99-09-/321578951791
this looks like a 2000-2003 1.2 8v punto, in which case oil leaks from the rocker cover and cam seal (coil pack end) are entirely normal. Even a new rocker cover gasket leaks after a few months.

8v engine is non interference so even if cambelt breaks just re-time engine and put new belt on.

for shock absorber just do a bounce test, push down on corner and release should bounce once and return to rest. Oil on shock could be from the engine oil leak or the can of wd40 the mechanic used.

get yourself over to the fantastic fiat forum who will help you learn to keep this car on the road until the tin worm eats the rear floors.

Thanks a lot for that. Very good post.

Just about to order that. Wanted to ask. What do I use to cut it by 1cm?

Hacksaw if you have access, angle grinder to save time, air saw if you have wind.

Will I be able to use an angle grinder whilst i'm under the car? It's quite limited space wise.

Probably a lot easier than you could use a hacksaw - take usual PPE precautions of glasses, gloves, ear defenders etc, and try and protect vulnerable components (rubber boots, plastic fuel tanks (if fitted) etc) from the stream of sparks.

I've done it many times, but YMMV.

given how close the back box on these is to the rear subframe pushing the whole system back 10mm may not be a bad thing. Trial fit it before you cut it as you may get lucky.
