Satellite Television Box

Options
Sorry I don't know the correct terms.

A friend has told me that you can buy a TV box for £80 in the UK and it will work in southern Spain and get English channels (no further subscription). Is this correct, as I didn't think English boxes worked unless you had the proper Sky contract.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

A sky receiver will work in Spain, however it will require a larger dish, probably around 1.3 metres in southern Spain, but dependant on specific location.

You will only get free to view channels without a Sky Card.
  • Right OK thanks.

If I buy a Freeview box will that work?

And are the free to view channels things like ITV, BBC etc?

A Freeview Receiver will work in Spain, however it will only receive Spanish TV channels.

A Sky Receiver will give lots of free to view channels including BBC 1 / ITV, but not Channel 4 or 5's or Sky 3 without an active card inserted.

its free to air not free to view i'm not having a go but free to view you need a card
  • OK thanks, I have a box that recxeives European chnnels and also Sky News, BBC World and CNN; it was 90 euros from Lidl in Spain for the whole set up. I also have an 80cm dish.

What do I need to get to watch Coronation Street and Homes Under the Hammer? And National Geographic??

  • You would need a Sky box and subscription to get National Geographic but Sky do not sell subscriptions outside the UK and Ireland. There are ways round this though ;). Corrie is on ITV so no sub required. I am not sure what channel Homes under the Hammer is on so can't advise on that.

It's probably best to enquire locally in Spain. If you are in an area with lots of British ex-pats there is sure to be someone who can supply and install everything you need.
  • Not many expats here and those there are have the Sports Channels!! Also they pay 40 euros a month; can't afford that.

So there is no way we can get the above-mentioned channels for free? Or even just pay to get National Geographic and nothing else?

  • I they have Sky Sports then you need the same equipment they have, though obviously a different subscription package.
  • Just done a bit of Googling and found this site http://www.skysthelimit.tv/ . They claim to know all about receiving Sky TV in Spain but I know nothing at all about them so the usual caveats apply. Might be worth contacting them?
  • there is a shop on ebay that do these and they send you them from SPAIN so I would imagine you would be able to get one cheaoer in spain...just do a search for sky boxes or remotes...:Das I was looking for a remote when I came across it...:D
