When they messed up the BBC News website, I changed my homepage to bbc.co.uk which sufficed in the short term.

Now that have messed that up I'm wondering where to go now.

Just want a basic homepage telling me what's happening in the world when I wake up in the morning without all the flashy images

Any suggestions?

You could look at maybe using RSS news feeds into an RSS reader addon/plugin for your browser?

I don't think you can get much more basic than the BBC news site.
However I agree with bod1467, the best way for you to get basic news views is to RSS feed the BBC news website.

I moved to the BBC weather page and set it to my local area.

Yes, but currently there are three 'stories' on the main screen - before you scroll anywhere (there were about ten this morning)
One telling me about ManU's latest signing, One about Mary Berry (is this news?) and One telling me about the new website.
    :(

I think we must be looking at different web pages! I think you are just looking at the BBC home page, which is how you describe....I'm looking at this .... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news

Over many years (including dial-up), experience tells me to have a quick loading home page. I see computers loading that bing/microsoft page, probably the guts of a megabyte of pics and video, and I just despair.

And worse still, pages loading adverts and stuff from many different websites, local newspapers being the biggest culprits.

They also ruined the android app, it was simple and just worked. a 4x2 panel with the main news item headings, open it and it was full screen with just the main news, you could alter that to your own liking, just sport or a choice of UK or international news etc.

I actually uninstalled the new app and installed an older version and will never update it again.

What video are you seeing on the Bing page?
