Hi MSE's

When the House of Commons returns from recess, one of the topics that is scheduled for debate is online retail delivery charges. This debate will take place at approximately 5pm on Tuesday 8 September.

How do online retail delivery charges affect you? Do you think changes should be made to them?

This debate has been proposed by Gavin Robinson MP

It might be better if you actually say what you are debating?

Do you want to double these charges, half them or abolish them all together?

"How do online retail delivery charges affect you?"

Well I should have thought that was obvious! If I pay £5 for delivery I've got £5 less to spend on other things!!!

"Do you think changes should be made to them?"

What changes? You are going to pay for delivery one way or the other. Even when an item has "free delivery" the cost of delivery has been added to the price of the item.

I can't believe you are wasting time debating something you can't change (unless you want to run the Royal Mail as a free service?)

If you want to do something useful have the same debate but about VAT.

I'll start you off by answering your questions, how does it affect me? VAT makes things so expensive I can't afford to buy them.

Do I think changes should be made? Yes, you should scrap it.

So many ways. For example, if I don't pay them, I don't get the thing I bought! That affects me considerably. Whereas, if I do pay them, I have less money. And you can imagine how that affects me.

Do you think changes should be made to them?

Sure, why not? Sounds like a good idea, and one I'd definitely back. What do we want? Changes to online delivery charges! When do we want them? Now! What changes specifically do we want? We don't know, nobody bothered to let us know what changes were being proposed!

All in all, another sterling example of why it's no wonder less and less people vote for any of our politicians when this is the level of clarity their own 'digital outreach team' can manage.

Online retail delivery charges can make me feel satisfied. I think they're worth paying for............if the courier is a quality company such as UPS.;)

Online retail delivery charges make me feel extremely dissatisfied and angry...........if the courier is Yodel.:(

I would like changes made. I want online companies to disclose which courier company they use. I can then make an informed decision before I make a purchase. If I know a company (such as Sports Direct and Tesco Mobile) use Yodel for their deliveries, I will not make any purchases with them.

Another thing that annoys me is promotional emails from companies (such as Calendar Club) which tempt you with offers. Their latest is '20% OFF orders over £10 + free delivery'..........and when you look at their website, nearly every calendar is £9.99.

I think the suggestion of a choice of couriers might be useful to some people. While the delivery company drivers round here are all pretty good, I know some can be a source of frustration for other areas! Infact I did buy something from a small company in the past who gave the choice of two. It clearly stated at checkout it would be an extra 50p for one of them (I guess they couldn't negotiate a price to match the cost of the other company - one that gets frequent complaints) but some may feel it is worth it to avoid frustration of having no choice but use a company who has caused you a problem in the past.

As a whole I don't mind paying a delivery charge as living rurally it still costs me less than if we had to drive/pay for parking or pay a bus fare to get to the shop to buy it in person. Eg, I needed to go to the next town for a something needed quickly recently. To get me and my two children there and back on the bus (partner who drives was at work) was around £11.30. If I had been more organised on that occasion I would have rather ordered it a day or so sooner and paid a £3.99 delivery charge. As it turns out it would still have been cheaper to pay for Next day delivery than the bus fare in the end.

No surcharges for any areas which royal mail/parcel force deliver to as standard seems like a good idea!

If I pay for the delivery then I obviously have less to spend

As Lucyxx says maybe giving us a choice as to which courier we would like to deliver the package.

Apart from taking any charges into account when making price comparisons they make no difference.

Do you think changes should be made to them?

They should be nothing to do with Parliament.

Sounds like the kind of parliamentary over-regulation that Jezza Corbyn would be proud of. These are private companies and they should be left to charge whatever they want for delivery, and obviously if they charge too much they will lose their customers, and if they charge too little, they will go bust.

@UKP - was this a load of hot air or did anything constructive come out of this debate?

Looking at the MP's constituency I would assume it is about the high delivery charges to what some retailers and courier companies consider "outlying" areas.

There are anomalies in the system where I know that someone in a very rural area pays less for a delivery than someone in a town when the delivery is made from a depot in the town, the delivery charge is based on post code alone.
