    :hello:

As it looks like we'll be here (rented) for another winter I'd like to line my bedroom curtains (help keep the light out too). Do I need special lining to keep the heat in ot can I use anything (must be neat as the curtains came with the house - they're not mine!)

    Thanks C x

You could look out for thicker lined curtains in the charity shops and put them up instead of the ones that came with the flat - just put them up when the landlady checks at the end and as they will be packed away they wont get dirty and you wont have to clean them either.
That way you could line your own cheaper curtains without worrying about any damage?? HTH

This is afabulous thread - I am going to start at the beginning and make a list but thought I would jump in and ask for advice!!
I need to make a door curtain as I very seldom find curtains long enough for my windows/doors. does anyone know any shops/web sites that sell cheap material (thick cheap material) ??
I have thought about sewing a pair of shorter ones together end to end but I am not brilliant on the machine - I will manage to make one from scratch if the fabric is long enough IYSWIM!!!! the drop is 98 inches and will probably need to be width and a half to be effective.

    Any ideas out there??

    Hi toottie

I got really long ones from Rosebys for £14 per pair a month ago. They're a neutral cream colour but you could dye them. They're soooo wide I cut one in half as one easily did two doors even gathering them up nicely at the top, and they are so long they trail the floor. They are lined but not brilliantly so - I am going to buy some cheap fleece from ikea and line them in between the fabric and the lining so it doesn't show. So they actually work out fairly cheap, and less work than making them from scratch.
  • Thanks for that silvercharming - and we actually do have a rosebys here so I will take a look this week - that will be my first 'winter' job. there are loads of great ideas on here - my next job will be to do something about my fire - think i will have to go to the DIYers for some help.

my door curtain is a bare 1 1/2 x the width of the door. I measured very accurately for the length and sewed 2 lengths of very thick embroidered black tapestry (in a sale) right side to right side. I sewed the 2 sides and bottom. Turned it to the right side and pressed the edges. I then turned in the top edges and machine sewed it and sewed ruflette on the top. It looks very nice and is very very effective

In thinking about who needs what for the coming winter I decided everybody in this house is low on socks.

So I decided to upturn the HUGE sock basket we have sitting upstairs. It's the basket that collects all the lonely socks that come out of the washing machine. (you know when their mate has been eating by the sock monster)

It was a bit of a chore I must admit, but the result is that I won't need to buy any new socks this winter!

If you are still left with odd or holey socks they are a BRILLIANT thing to have around! Not just as stuffing for draught excluders either. I use strips cut off the tops for elastic bands, cable tidies, even hair bobbles, and old socks are ace for cleaning and dusting!

    Thanks Silvercharming!

What a brill Idea about the socks.

I still have half a washing basket full of unmatched socks! I'm sure most of them will never be reunited with their mates. They will have been trown away in the past, lost, or eaten by the dog.

But will def. keep a good load of them for dusting and cleaning duties.
I don't use draft excluders as we don't really have drafts in the house.. it's all double glazing. And if I stick them on the floor under doors etc I'm sure the dog will find them very tasty. :rotfl:

But great tip about the cleaning! Thanks again.
(now why didn't I think of that?)

  • so far all i have done is buy some really nice 70's style curtains to make into draft excluder and me and boyf spent sun morning going around the house filling in gaps that let in draft. Porches need replacing wood is rooting but no money so just sealing the gaps this year.
