I did actually want to ask you Wise Winter Withstanding sorts something.
Grit..where the heck do I get that from?
Our 1.5 mile walk to school is never gritted.. and now me being more bump than balance I don't fancy my chances at all should we have more of the black ice & 2 foot of snow combinations.. with councils already skint..
need I go on?
(with that in mind I have added "Well gripping wellies" to my "need to get " list! - I ended up flat on my face far too many times last year)

You get chaintype thingies to clamp over your shoes/wellies. And I know they say about berries and hard winters - but we did not have more than the usual berries last year- and yet we had 5 weeks of lying snow and at the deepest it was over 4ft. So I think the berries might come AFTER a hard winter LOL and not before !0

I sometimes do it with my left foot as well.
Now see I can't do that otherwise I leave myself open to excruciating cramp in the night
I love getting into a snuggly bed - I clap my feet together like sealMy H thinks I am nuts
I don't mean to upset anyone but I LOVE the Autumn & Winter and I deliberately try and get really cold feet before going to bed just for the joy of putting them on a hot water bottle. OH thinks I'm nuts:o
Me tooI like my summer don't get me wrong but I do love the colder months just as much if not a teeny bit more. But then it might have something to do with Christmas being during Winter - all those outside Christmas lights - makes everything all cheery

I've been looking for some sources as well. If you google road grit or rock salt you will find plenty but it's not cheap as you have to buy in bulk and the cheapest price for a delivered load seems to be about £60!!!
Per their website, B&Q are selling 10kg bags of granulated salt for about £6 which seems a much better bet. However they don't seem to have them in stock in my local branch
I've taken to buying a 20p bag of ordinary salt every time I go shopping. I don't think it would give any traction, however.
What are other people doing? It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I heard that if you just put salt down, it will make the path v slippery. We will probably borrow a little from the local grit box and supplement with cat litter (since we have 2 cats we always have that in anyway).
Skint but happy with my lovely family

** My best idea for this winter **I think I am going to keep my 2 girls in bed with me this winter when its really cold so we can all snuggle up and keep warm
:j:j:j Three of us in together should be cosy
I have to say, I am really dreading the bills as this is a tight time for meI tend to stay up late at night so have the heating on late... I think this will have to change and am going to start going to bed earlier. I will also get my upstairs TV connected so I can watch tv in bed rather than heat the whole house.
I managed to recover my huge fleeces that i had in the old house, plus some other blankets and things. The kids already have fluffy boot slippers that still fit from last year, and I am going to get some this year too. Primarni here I come
Might line the curtains with fleece as I am sure that will make a huge difference.
Need to fit curtain pole and curtain to front door, already have the curtains so no expense there and will save some heat.
Need to alter the leftover curtain to fit the top of stairs window so hall and landing match
Would like a cheap/free rug for the hallway as its laminate and can be cold... awkward shape tho so might be hard to get something that will fit, or get 2 small ones...
Seal up the space around where the outside tap was fitted that lets the cold air into the kitchen and has done for several years :eek:0 -
***Maryb*** Dishwasher salt is coarser than food salt and would provide a bit more traction
Is cat litter a good substitute for grit? I have seen it mentioned a few times on here... ?
Would a bag of course sand do as grit?0 -

If you dont want to heat the whole house on a night just turn off radiators in the rooms you are not using. You can have just one radiator on if you want.If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -
hi please can i ask a question, i dont mean to sound thick, but if you have doubled glazed windows and no sign of drafts coming in does it really make much difference if your curtains are fleeced lined etc?, would it make the room warmer if they where lined? thankyou. One day I will live in a cabin in the woods0

The thought of another hard winter scares the life out of me.
I live in a semi-rural location so to get to work need to get in my car. They dont grit the roads outside my house and I live on a hill. It really frightens me trying to get to the main road with two small children in the back.
Rain - fine Cold - fine Snow - forget it.
Lets hope cold but no snow.Smoke Free since 1 January 20130
