Sorry I didn't get back about the IKEA solar lights. They give out a really bright light when well charged up, from a little cluster of what I think are LEDs. It's quite localised - good for training on a book or sewing etc (or the keyboard, as now) - but you can use them as a general background light by twisting the bendy bit to face up to the ceiling.

I normally click out the little solar panel before I go to bed at night, and put it in the window to catch the sun next day.

Bristol IKEA used to have a huge pile of them, but I only saw one yesterday! Oh, and the price has gone down from £17.99 to (I think) £14.99 - maybe £13.99?

They WERE using £1 from each sale to send the lamps to places in Africa without electricity, to allow children to do homework after 6pm sunset.
Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!

What a good idea that is we could do with something like that for our pantry cupboard, I could keep it charged up by putting it in the front window which faces south catches any sunlight there is......will have a look for them next time I go to Ikea.

The surveyor has been and we are getting extra insulation in the roof in a couple of weeks. The chap arrived with the stove and manhandled it into the sitting room for me, for which I was very grateful, it looks so tiny against the old one which was pretty big. It is very pretty, canoot wait to start using it....nice cosy sitting room this winter and more room in the sitting room too. I have to decide what its going to stand on, brick or stone......not marble, that would look out of place in a cottage. I will have to do some research on the internet see what I can find.......

I love the look of that burner, csarina - so pretty! I wish I could have something like that in my flat. (One of the reasons I took on my current flat is that it has a lovely gas-powered burner in the living, which I thought would be great on cold nights. Unfortunately I found after I moved in that it doesn't work and never has - they didn't bother to tell me that when I was asking about the place. :()

I think I need to get a move on with my winter preparations - I got in my car late last night and it was covered in condensation. Here comes autumn! (My favourite time of year. :D)

The next big item on my list is some sort of hanging to go on the wall behind my bed - it's an outside wall and can get pretty chilly. I'll have to find a nice one to buy, as making such things is utterly beyond me. :o
Back after a very long break!

September cold, snow for Scotland, frost for England?

We'll be issuing our autumn long range forecast later this month, and at the beginning of September our White Christmas 2010 forecast will begin updating. We mentioned the chance of August snow in the Alps a few weeks ago, and those of you who keep an eye on the Stelvio Pass web cam will have seen that it snowed very heavily there a few days ago. Closer to home we do think there is a strong possibility of an unusually early cold snap affecting Britain during September bringing the chance of snow to Scotland, and frost to England and Wales.

this must be the shortest summer on record ! We had snow right up to the last minute, a short spring and an even shorter odd summer. Now more snow. Lovely. I need to knit faster !!! LOL

I've had a phone call this morning from Warmfront :D I have a man coming around tomorrow to measure up for central heating :j:jI'm just hoping they can fit it sooner than later as we have no heating downstairs (gas fire has been condemned) and only gas heaters in the bedrooms which are hopeless because even on their lowest setting you cook. In this weather its cold due to the damp atmosphere & there's not really anything to do about it except add more layers & pretend its winter rather than August! :(
