And a coal fire wont burn unless you have some nice healthy draughts -- So this house should be ok then !! I'm lying on the couch listening to the wind howling and the rain hammering down outside; and it is SO peaceful and cosy in here. I quite like winter.
  • i've treated myself to some new slippers from celtic sheepskin - they were very expensive (about £30) but they are just the lovliest slippers i've ever had and v toasty!
plus yesterday i got a quilted bedspread from matalan also £30 but it is really nice too, floral but tasteful, saves me having to buy a thicker duvet AND a new duvet cover to replace my yucky one.
so i'm feeling fairly ready though i really ought to sew some extra material onto my curtains which aren't quite wide enough to close completely!
tchibo had draught excluders for £4.90 they were sold out in my local shop and online but someone might be lucky and find them.
also on a slightly different note i've re-joined the library and am quite looking forward to early nights in bed cosied up with a good book... in fact i think that's where i'm headed now!

Another item crossed off my winter to-do list today! I finally bought some slippers - nice, white fluffy ones from Mr T that are a cross between slippers and ankle boots. Very cosy! I think we're getting there in terms of preparations now. :)

Where's Mr T? Is it a shop or?

Thanks Mrs T. Why on earth not say so? Very confusing, I bet there are other shops etc that I've missed probably thinking they're some unusual store only to be found in offshore islands or something.

    Thanks again!

This has probably been mentioned posts back, but I am finding that wearing an old pair of tights under my jeans really helps take that chill off the legs. Not long to go to that November date now.

My FIL was a painter/decorator & obviously had extreme working conditions at times. He used to [STRIKE]nick[/STRIKE]borrow MIL's tights to wear under his trousers & overalls cuz he said they were much warmer than long johns--well, no! He refused to be seen wearing thermals but apparently ladies hosery was acceptable :rotfl:

I've seen some cute doggie & kitten draught excluders in a PDSA charity shop; good material that looks like tapestry but probably uphostery grade cotton & around the £4:50 price mark. Takes the sting out of paying for summat if the proceeds are going towards a good cause I feel.

  • Motorbikers have been wearing tights under jeans and waterproofs for eons !
DH has some lovely longjohns from LIDLs though, even wears them when he's not going biking! Can't persaude the DS's to wear long johns or tights yet but wait until they get into serious biking!

  • Can recommend Primarks's long johns - OH swears by them. Got to get some more at the weekend for him.
Have fleece blankets under the bottom sheet of the bed.
Made 4 draft excluders using 2 fleece blankets that Thomson gave us when we flew with them last year that were just sat on a chair. Used old out of shape tshirts, clean holey tights, etc to fill them.
Had wooden flooring down so needed to block off the draughts from under the door.
Two new hot water bottles bought and covers made from towels.
Put all tea lights in holders and 2 large packs of 100 tealights in cupboard to refill. Use these on a night instead of big light if we just watching tv.
Have had the gas fire on a few times, but central heating not going on til November.
Have 2 fleece blankets on settee to cuddle under when cold.
Have fleecy bedsocks to wear with slippers to keep feet warm.
Have cardboard to make heat reflectors with when i buy the silver foil and need 4 fleece blankets from Asda to hang with the curtains - brill idea!!!
Mortgage free as at 1/9/13 :j
To start work on the credit cards now!!
  • Well so far have:
Put the autumn duvet on the bed.

Dug out fleece tops/jumpers (although it is still too mild to need most of them!)

Bought 2 fleece blankets from Millets which were reduced from £12.99 to £6.49, YAY! I put one on the bed last night as it cold cold in the middle of the night and it felt lovely after that.

Bought some thermal T shirts for all of us which we have worn a couple of times but not really needed yet.

Gone through the hat and glove collection and thrown away some odd gloves which were taking up space in there! Discovered that my fleece gloves are practically in holes so need to buy a new pair.

Bought some thermal socks for DH as he feels the cold, put he hasn't needed to wear them yet.

Haven't done anything else yet as it is still quite mild in Devon at the moment, but feel more prepared for a cold snap if/when it comes and haven't needed to put the heating on yet, so less money going to Npower at the moment!
