broadband without landline rental

Options
Hello, I need a bit of advice really. I've been with Talktalk for 6 years and currently on Simply broadband package where I pay £2.50 for 12 months and then £5 for remaining of 6 months. I understand that in order to have Simply broadband package I have to rent a landline from them too. last years I paid for Value landline rental upfront. To be honest, I don't really use landline as such. Now my value landline up for renewal again.
the question I got - is it possible to have broadband without having landline rental?
if so what are the current deals?

Thanks

I don't think any ADSL providers offer broadband without paying line rental any more. Virgin do, but the price of their standalone broadband is around the same price as their broadband + line rental offer.

When you pay line rental you are paying for the upkeep of the physical cable that carries both broadband and telephone signals to your home. Without that cable there'd be nothing to plug your router into... if you don't want a "landline" (i.e. landline phone calls) just don't plug a phone into it.

As mentioned above, cable (Virgin Media) broadband is slightly different in that the broadband comes through the same cable used for TV signals. In that case you can get broadband only, but you'll still have to pay a "line rental" for the cable (although in the case of VM it's sold as a single, all-inclusive price). I think VM is more expensive than the cheapest ADSL deals, even when you include line rental.

If you live in central London there's a thing called Relish that (I think) uses mobile phone networks, but it's still more expensive than the cheap ADSL deals.

If you have a good mobile signal and fairly low data requirements you could use a mobile wifi (mifi) device with a data SIM card - but AFAIK there are no longer any unlimited data providers for this, and if you use more than 6GB or so of data a month you'll end up spending more than the cheap ADSL deals.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Yes, you can get standalone broadband without line rental! Try some smaller providers.
Have a look at Adept-Telecom. Based in Tunbridge Wells, they are mostly business broadband providers, but they certainly supply residential customers too. The MSE people think they do not, but they are 100% WRONG! I know for a fact that they do!. I have even met all the directors of the Company!! The broadband they provide may cost you a bit more, but it is a business-class broadband with lower contention (fewer users per line).
You want a landline? Well, how about free?
If you have shares in Adept-Telecom they will provide a free residential landline (there is a small connection fee) and free evening and weekend calls. This is whether you have broadband with them or not.
Oh, and as a shareholder there is currently a dividend paid to you as well. Daytime calls are 3p a minute inc VAT.
As these are shares the usual warnings apply, and this is not advice to buy shares or otherwise! Check out their website. Click on Investors for the deal I mentioned.
SSE do standalone broadband, but if you look elsewhere in the Forum you will find a lot of criticism of their service!
