  • steve , how did you burn the iso to a disc , did you just copy it or use the proper image burning software with options set for bootable?

    Hi Freddy,

I just burned the ISO using imgburn. I don't recall imgburn asking anything to make it bootable. Is that my problem ?
  • Linux is not my cup of coffee , however a 30 sec google shows infa recorder as being the one to use on xp http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows

    Hiya

If I wanted to suggest how to get a Linux onto a PC, my starting point would be with a Magazine from W H Smith's or Asda, Tesco et al.

Use the cover disc and there would be a help section on selecting your boot drive.

Otherwise download a Linux Distribution "distro" that is popular and has a help forum, by going via Distrowatch looking for a 'live' version.

Linux User & Developer, Linux Format and Linux mags.

An easy and well supported distro would be Linux Mint or PCLos,

    http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=189, a 1.4 gig download.
    http://www.pclinuxos.com/get-pclinuxos/lxde/, a 656 meg download.
Both would extract to a DVD's.

If you could get a usb stick to boot from your computer then a 2 gig should suffice.

The Live PCLos file would be called pclinuxos-lxde-2014.12.iso and would then be extracted to DVD.

I use 7zip and examined the contents...

    boot
    isolinux
    [BOOT]
    livecd.sqfs

The .iso need to be extracted using something like... CDBurnerXp
    https://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

and there should be an extraction and creation phase.

Where are you in this cycle?

You have extracted and burned a DVD and it is not bootable.

    So a faulty download?
An error in the extraction, it wasn't just copied iso to dvd.
perhaps a write error in the software.

I would suggest USB stick that can be erased quickly and rewritten.

So can you list the files on the DVD please.

  • Hi all,

I am going to stick with xp. I have now got another pc; a HP laptop.

I cannot complain as my old pc is over 10 years old and I have ghost restored it a few times; so I have great value for money with it. For info, it was a Dell Dimension PC.

I will keep it and just keep restoring it with the ghost backup as and when needed.

Not impressed with Ubuntu but then it could be something to do with my old pc set up.

I am just a step above beginner with regard to Linux. :)

I would not be expecting Ubuntu to run well on a 10yo pc.
Despite what many would have you believe, Ubuntu is not a replacement for XP.
It has higher system requirements than XP, for it to run satisfactorily. If you want to try out a Linux distro on this machine, use ImgBurn to burn a 'Live' CD/DVD of something like LXLE , Zorin or one of the Mint variations that comes with a lightweight desktop, not Cinnamon.

re enfield freddy's comment about the disk being bootable, as long as you burned it correctly using ImgBurn 'write image file to disk', the bootable bit would have automatically been included.
    Move along, nothing to see.
