    You (or even just your wife) should not have received the money. The money would beloing to your wifes late father's estate and the executors should have taken care of everything before passing the property to your wife.

    Edit: Or is your OP wrong, in that your wife has not actually inherited the property at all? Is your wife acting as executor and as such is planning to sell the property? In which case, lets start again ... or may I suggest your wife goes and sees a solicitor and gets them to sort it all out.
