broadband - cable, no sport, no landline...

Options
Please please please somebody tell me how I can subscribe to a simple, no frills, cable broadband service. I don't want a landline, I don't want a phone, I don't want a telly/sport package - I just want a cable connection to the internet! Is that too much to ask from these 'service providers'?? PS I live in Bristol.

  • cable , you will be using virgin then?

yes they will do you an internet pack only , however unless you take the landline it will not be art of a package and there will be no discounts.

the last time I enquired it was only a few £ cheaper than a internet/phone settup

ie: package (typical) say £16 for landline , £10 for internet , £26 for the package

    single £16 for landline
    single £23 for broadband only.

There is only one cable provider as stated above. If you are in a cable area get Virgin cable BB only.

You can't get ADSL or FTTC broadband without a landline, which involves paying line rental-what do you think brings the broadband signal to the property?
As pointed out above, you can get VM cable without a phone service, but the costs will only be marginally less than if a phone is bundled with it.
If you don't want to pay line rental then the only other option is mobile broadband using a dongle.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The OP asked specifically about cable providers, not about landline providers.

Yes they did, but I'm not convinced that they understand the difference between the two, hence my comments.
If the OP does indeed require 'cable', then why ask the question, since VM would be the only possible option? Assuming that the OP is in a VM cable area of course...

  • OP has fully grasped the difference between copper and fibre, thanks ;-)

you do relise that most fibre connections still uses copper right ?

There is only 1 cable supplier, which is Virgin. Everyone else goes via the copper phone lines.

Virgin do offer a Broadband only connection, so if thats what you want, thats the only choice you have. You of course do still pay for line rental but its built into the price of the broadband, but at least you dont have to pay for a phone package on top
  • The bit that comes into your house is still copper with fibre BB.

Also, the fact remains that you can't get cable BB without a line rental element, so the obvious answer to the OP is you can't get what they are asking for..

It's a bit like expecting to be able to drive around with just petrol because you don't want the hassle of the vehicle that goes with it..

You may not get it without a inclusive line rental but it may work out cheaper:

Example without working at all out:

    50Mb BB only £30.25 (12 month contract).
50Mb BB and phone £34.99 (18 month contract) though with initial discounts it could be cheaper to take the package and then when out of contract remove the phone.

So OP have you not sorted anything out in the past two weeks?
