Another family who will now have to buy bin bags rather than reusing super market bags. The problem is those who don't dispose of them properly so we all have to suffer :(
    I think....

Suffer?. You're buying bin bags. Thats hardly suffering.
  • I take plastic storage boxes when I go to Aldi, just put all shopping back in trolley and wheel it out to the boot and dump shopping in. Then carry boxes to the kitchen when I get home. Easier than bags.

Nothing to stop you carrying on buying plastic bags at 5p each to reuse for rubbish if you want :)

I remember going to a kitchen drawer to find loads of confetti like bits of plastic which I presume was once a bag. I imagine, then, that the 'decomposition' of these bags still puts plastics into the environment for hundreds of years.

    And guess what!

It is not a tax. NONE of the money goes to the government,

Sorry to spoil your little rant about the tax grabbing government.

    WRONG!

There is VAT for VAT registered businesses, so 0.83p of each bag "sold" goes to the Government, so they are indeed tax grabbing ****** and Aletank is entitled to his rant.

A 5p charge on single-use carrier bags will be introduced in England from 5 October 2015, bringing the country into line with the rest of the UK, and HMRC has published details confirming how VAT should be accounted for on the new "bag tax".
Where suppliers are liable to charge VAT, the amount they charge for a bag is tax inclusive of the standard rate of VAT.

    • For a VAT registered business charging 5 pence, the taxable amount will be 4.17 pence and the VAT 0.83 pence.
    • Non-VAT registered suppliers must still charge the same minimum amount of 5 pence.
    • Suppliers using a retail scheme should ensure that VAT is properly accounted through their scheme
This charge is compulsory when goods are supplied in England by suppliers who have more than 250 full time equivalent employees.

I have my shopping delivered with no carrier bags. I have a couple of those big blue IKEA bags by the door and empty the crates into those, then carry them through to the kitchen when I'm done.

I still end up with about 5-6 carrier bags every time though, as (Tesco) still seem to insist on putting 1-2 frozen items in their own carrier bag which they then tie in a very tight knot that can only be ripped, rendering the bag completely useless afterwards. Oh well.

It's not just the disposal of carrier bags that is an enviromental problem. The production is too. I predict a rise in the sales of bin liners!

I note that Waitrose are not charging 5p per bag but a fixed charge per visit/delivery. This from an email received today:
From 5 October, the government will introduce a new law that will require us to charge for plastic bags. It's all to help reduce waste, which we fully support. Orders from waitrose.com will now be delivered without bags, though you can request bags at the checkout for the flat charge of 40p. Online orders for collection will cost 30p. For more information about carrier bags charges, click here.
In the past a large order might have 20+ bags - for 30p/40p??

They are charging 5p per bag in store, but the fixed charge is for click and collect and delivery orders. It does make sense, as a supermarket charges for the delivery before packing it, and at that point they would not know exactly how many carrier bags would be used.

If Tesco is anything to go by, when I had deliveries with bags in the past they would often put a single item in a bag and tie it in a tight knot that could not be undone without destroying the bag. If I was charged 5p each for 20 bags that were not used 'effectively' (i.e. it could easily have been packed into 10) I'd be pretty annoyed to be honest.

If the customer isn't packing for themselves, it's just destined to be a cause of complaints when a customer feels that less bags could/should have been used/charged, and a flat fee avoids this.

long ago, before bags were free, some supermarkets used to leave their empty boxes out for the punters to carry their stuff home.

They got rid of their waste with no effort, customers were able to get their shopping in the boot easily.

    Hopefully the idea will return
