As far as I am aware the retailers costs are a % of the total transaction, so to take it to an extreme if a customer bought a newspaper and took fifty pounds in cash back the commission would be more than the profit on the paper.?
What am I missing.
What you are missing is this...........
It costs any retailer money to bank cash, so the more money a retailer can hand out as cashback the less cash they would have to bank.
Saving them lots & lots of money.
P.S
Credit cards are charged as a % of the transaction debit cards are charged per transaction.
Credit card charge to retailer could be from 1% up to maybe 3%.
Debit card fee per tranaction could be from .12p up to .35p.

I didn't realise I had caused such confusion, the card was a Santander debit card, it isn't new. I think it was the first time I had tried to get cash back from Aldi. I have never had a cash back problem in any other supermarket with this card. As I wanted the cash back I cancelled the transactionand paid with another card.
I suspect it is problem with Aldi, as you say they have not updated their systems.
Thank you for all your replies, perhaps this info might be useful for someone else.0 -
For what it's worth. My bank of Scotland card had the exact same issue, and that was never fixed. That, and the complete lack of usable cash machines was why I switched.0

Your BOS card could be used in any LINK ATM (and most others too), which won't have been any different with your new card.0 -

Thats not the case anymore, debit cards also now charge a percentage based fee, allbeit much lower than a credit card.0 -

From an interchange perspective, Yes (I.e. what the card scheme charges the merchant's bank) but usually the terminal processor will just use the same charging system for all debit cards.0
