Aldi/Santander

Yesterday I tried to get cash back at an Aldi store using my Santander 123 debit card. Before he put it through the assistant said, oh it's a Santander card this might not work. He was correct it wouldn't work.
He said it seems to be a problem only with Santander cards.
I haven't had a problem getting cash back in other supermarkets.
Has anyone else had this problem? should I notify Santander?

I doubt if it's a Santander problem, much more likely to be that Aldi have not updated their systems to allow Santander cards to be used.
Is it a new card? If so are the first 6 digits different to what they were on a previous card? It could be that Santander have issued new card numbers and the Issuer Identification Number (IIN) has not yet made it's way through various systems to Aldi.0 -

The card works for payments, but doesn't work for cashback.
That said, I don't see either how it can be Santander's fault.0 -
Could be their system thinks it's a credit rather than debit card, either because Aldi's system is confused, or Santander are using a different card type identifier.Peter

If you've just not got the cashback, I'd just phone up Santander and see if they can credit you with the cashback, as they should be able to see that you spent money at Aldi.
Note that it may be the merchant category used by Aldi, though I doubt thats the issue - check your statement to see what the merchant code is. Yoh should be able to check somewhere on Santanders site what merchant codes provide cashback.0 -

It's the cashback at the till. Their debit card doesn't pay cashback on purchases unless it's some special personal offer.0 -
You seem to have missed the point.

Well maybe I have and maybe I haven't. The OP's comment "oh it's a Santander card this might not work" can be read either as the entire transaction didn't work, or as the cashback part of it didn't work. You've read it one way and I've read it the other. As it stands we don't know which it is, so we need the OP to come back and clarify.0 -
You are confused.

It'll be because of the first 6 digits of the card. The POS obviously seems to think its a credit card.0

To go off tangent slightly. I can never understand way a retailer would offer this facility at all. As far as I am aware the retailers costs are a % of the total transaction, so to take it to an extreme if a customer bought a newspaper and took fifty pounds in cash back the commission would be more than the profit on the paper.?
