:wall: You were not running a credit check on your wife, you were obtaining a copy of her credit report!

A lender doing a search will not see the name of all the companies you have accounts with. They will just see a generic account type e.g. credit card

Obtaining a copy of the consumer's own report illicitly, as if you were that person, would show all the companies.

A lender checking would not see many types of searches/unrecorded enquires that you would. e.g. types of debt collection searches, ID verifications, soft searches etc.

Plus probably some other details/info that only the owner of the report might see, for their info only, as it is their report.

So have we established whether the OP's wife got copies of her own credit reports and due to being financially linked it also showed up as a search on the OP's credit report? Or could it be she's applied for credit and again due to being financially linked it has shown up? Or whether she has definitely obtained his credit report, which I'm not aware is illegal if anyone can tell me otherwise?

Not true. When my partner had a joint account with his brother (they used to live together), my OH obtained a copy of his credit report and it showed all the applications for credit cards/loans etc that his brother had applied for as an individual.

    According to Experian:

    Financial associate searches
A financial associate search will be shown on your report when someone you are financially linked to has
applied for credit and a lender has looked at your credit report as a result. It does not mean that you have
applied for credit or that the application was for joint finances. The record will show that your information
was used because you are financially linked to the person who applied.

And the OP's wife was not apply for credit just a copy of a credit file which isn't the same thing.

Why does my associate’s financial information not appear on my report?

We can only give you the information we hold about you. This does not include information that relates to
    your associate.

Credit files can get confused. I have the same initials as my mother and despite never having a joint account with her I was able to see entries from her credit file for some bizarre reason. Thankfully my brother has different initials from us due to his woeful credit files.

I doubt his wife would know what month/year(s) he opened his bank/card accounts etc. in order to pass security to obtain a copy of HIS report. She probably just wanted to obtain a copy of her credit report and the OP has jumped to the wrong conclusion all because they still share a joint bank account and they both can see what each other have been spending money on.

It's perfectly plausible that a spouse would know enough information about their OH's finances to pass security. I was able to help my brother obtain his Noddle credit report using educated guesses because he is clueless about his finances.
