operation timed out!

i keep getting above message about five minutes after turning on my computer , when i am trying to access any sites
i have virgin broadband and previously used on laptop without any problems. this has only started happening since i have been using pc.
any help/advice appreciated

do ukno if u are using cable or ADSL internet?

deffo cable. dont have to dial up what so ever.

do u have a network at all in your house? if u do simply plug your modem directly into your pc. and see if if ur internet works then.

also if that doesnt work. might save a lot of questions if u ring virgin

cable wire goes into modem which has ethernet port which is connected by ethernet cable to pc.
thanks phoodless, but i have never visited this site and actually i apologise cos i made a mistake , its actually, startvg.com
home page on internet exp. goes straight to fast4 and when i try to access any other site thru this , the dial up to fast4 window appears,
and i cannot get past this

In internet explorer,go into tools, internet options, connections and make sure 'never dial a connection' box is checked.
While you are there click on the general tab and reset your homepage to one that you want, i.e. Google or presumably Virgin.

Have you done a spyware/malware scan recently ( using spybot or similar ) ??

It could be something lurking on your system ?
