Putting Contracts on Hold (Vodafone)

I am going away for a year and have about a year left on my Vodafone phone contract, has anyone ever managed to put their contract on hold and continue it at a later date.

Or does anyone have any ideas how I can avoiding wasting £23 a month on my phone contract when I won't be using it.

I can't see them agreeing to this tbh, as far as I know it's only something they offer to those away with the armed forces.

Only solution to get out of paying would be to find someone else who would be willing to take over the contract in their name (Providing they can pass the credit check that is).

Sell the phone and use that to pay toward the early termination charge that is needed to end the contract early.
