Were you informed before you entered into the contract that Enterprise doesn't allow you to return cars after 5pm? If not, you could argue that you had no safe place to keep the car overnight and that the consequent risk to the car overnight should be borne by Enterprise rather than by you.
BUT how can you prove that you did not damage the car?
    Political?....I dont do Political....well,not much!
  • Neither did I, Many years ago maybe insurance was more expensive for obvious reasons but now there is little in it from NI to the mainland.

Premiums in Northern Ireland can be up to twice as expensive as England. One reason is the level of personal injuries claims.

The OP doesn't need to. The only issue is that the risk to the car would be Enterprise's on the assumption that it breached contract by refusing to accept the return of the car after 5pm.

My step dad used to have car insurance that meant he could drive any car (not too sure ont he uns and outs of it mind). Might be worth checking your insurance just in case there are any clauses (but it's swings and roundabouts as It could push up your premium anyway)

  • Ah, that policy I pay £1.99 a day for would have saved you £1,000!

TBH £800 to repair 2 doors seems reasonable. Don't forget it is not a simple job of popping out the dents. The metal will have been stretched and this needs to be dealt with properly.

Even assuming no parts cost that only equates to about 10 hours labour at current rates

Unless its a high net worth policy then DOC a) only covers you third party and so doesnt cover damage to the vehicle you are in control of just the damage you cause to others and b) doesnt cover things like hire cars or lease vehicles

Without having a bodyshop person look at it there is no way to judge what a fair price is for the repair of 2 doors. Whilst you say its not scratched that doesnt mean its going to be possible to fix the dent without damaging the paint (or it may be cheaper to damage the paint and respray than spend hours trying to knock it out from the back without damaging the pain)

£800 doesnt sound a terrible price for a bodyshop rather than backstreet/ mobile minor dent person

Well I don't know who you are insured with but mine is no different to a good friend across the water who has a very similar car with similar driving history and no claims etc.
