I allow myself £20 a week for food, £20 a week for petrol and £20 a week for going out/extras etc.
I take the whole £60 out in cash every week. It is a struggle I will admit, I gave myself a month off this month and was probably a mistake as I have ended up being £130 overdrawn

  • Wow, some of you live on next to nothing!

I allow myself usually at least £100 per month for treats and £60 per week on top of that for food, petrol (use about a tenner a week) and going out etc (although I've recently quit smoking so hopefully I can lower this)

But I think different amounts work for different people. Last year, I tried living on £5 per day for everything - food, petrol going out, gifts etc and because I was being so tight I ended up falling off the wagon. But I am in the fortunate position of having about half of my wages left after my bills each month (I get £1200 per month)

I think it depends on your personal position
Was debt free... then went travelling!
  • ARGH! I feel like I spend loads now .... I take out £50 a week to spend on food / luxuries / etc ... but now feel i need to reduce this ... maybe small steps at a time!!

    £45, then £40 .......

I can only dream of having £100 a month to spend on myself, treats etc. Can I ask what those who have this money actually spend it on? TBH I dont know what I would spend £100 on in a month, I'm so used to having so little. Does that make me a bit sad!

People are doing so much better than me. After paying all my bills, repayments etc, I have £600 left in a month and I'm still totally broke on the last week. This has to cover food and diesel but still. In a week I spend £50 on fuel for work and food shopping at the supermarket.

That leaves £100 and I usually spend half of this on going out, leaving £50.

I think I need to do better

It's normally about £10 a week for me to spend on the occasional magazine etc or meeting a friend for coffee, I often don't spend anywhere near that and roll it over to the next week.

I take a packed lunch to work, so don't buy extra food other than the main weekly shop and petrol is already allocated in the household budget. I also do online surveys and have recently received £15 worth of Amazon vouchers, so currently deciding what treat to buy!
