Seeing as you should be using the other side of the road to overtake them safely, what difference does it make?
Most people do it to prevent motorists attempt an unsafe overtake (happens often) or to avoid motorists opening car doors into their path (happens often)trinidadone wrote: »Some Cyclists are now using fog horns, what has happoned to the tradional bell?trinidadone wrote: »Why the flashing rear and front lights at night, cant cyclist just have ordinary cycle lights like before, do the ordinary ones not work???
Probably in an attempt to be seen better so there's less chance of a motorist pulling out in front of / into you then saying "sorry mate, i didn't see you" (happens often)All your base are belong to us.0 -

Because there isn't enough room for other vehicles to overtake safely, so the cyclist "takes the lane" to discourage reckless/dangerous driving. Also, at junctions, where most accidents occur, it's important that cyclists ensure they are noticed and that vehicles generally don't overtake on the junction itself (which is often particularly foolhardy).
I usually try to stay to the left, but if vehicles attempt to speed past with millimetres to spare, I'll pull out to stop anyone else doing the same. It's just not worth the risk.
The more dangerously vehicles behave around me, the more likely I am to take the lane to protect myself. If motorists all obeyed the law and drove safely, it would rarely be necessary for a cyclist to take the lane (except, perhaps, at junctions where cyclists need to make sure they are seen).trinidadone wrote: »Some Cyclists are now using fog horns, what has happoned to the tradional bell?
Fog horns?! Are you sure?! I don't think I've ever seen fog thick enough that a cyclist would need to tow several tons of maritime equipment behind them! I guess you just mean a "horn".
The traditional bell is alive and well and great for alerting pedestrians to your presence. However, have you ever wondered why you don't have a bicycle bell on your car?trinidadone wrote: »Why the flashing rear and front lights at night, cant cyclist just have ordinary cycle lights like before, do the ordinary ones not work???
They can have "ordinary" lights, but the flashing ones increase conspicuity as our brains identify sudden changes in our visual field more rapidly and easily than gradual ones.
Why does it matter to you? Do the flashing ones not work???0 -

The average speed of motor traffic in London is slower than the average speed of cyclists.
During my cycling commute of 24 miles I average 14 MPH. When I make the same journey by car I average 8 MPH(according to official stats the average speed of vehicles in City Of London during the day is 8.98MPH)
As for cyclists 'hogging the road', cyclists account for 24% of all road traffic in central London during the day but only 12% of roads are dedicated cycle lanes(and these are regularly encroached on by vehicles)
Your argument would have some merit if you had done a modicum of research and put a balanced discussion across rather than this amateur attempt at trolling.
The only surprise I have at your post is that you didn't add the questions "Why don't cyclists pay road tax" and "Why do so many cyclists not wear helmets"0 -

i have read all this stuff on this thread regarding fog horns, flashing lights and primary postioning, yet, there are stillo massive deaths on the road, and endless you tube clips of people using the road, so something is still wrongTrinidad - I have a number of needs. Or have you just assumed the massive number of deaths are in some way due to one or more of those three things?0 -
Quite possibly, but could it be some other factor than those three you mentioned?

Thank you for your reasoned argument. I'll now leave you to your trolling.0 -
