I fell off my bike twice today. No cars or Pedestrians were involved, just mud, rain and an optimistic view, of the grip available at a stupid angle of lean.

I've never fallen off on the road. I keep away from the curb, and try to use roads where there is less traffic. In busy traffic, I tend to be overtaking most of it a lot of the time. But I'm a motorist too. I give bikes about a 4 foot gap when I overtake. And I indicate to show the cars behind that I'm overtaking a slower vehicle, so that maybe they can give them some room too.

One question to the OP ? Do you use indicators when you blast past the push bike ?

I hope you made a full recovery from your fall today

Nobody cares, but we assume you are very busy and want to get somewhere faster than the roads and traffic allow.

Try doubling your estimated journey time. Last time I went to London I estimated 8 hours. I mean it's 240 miles, so that's about right, on our rubbish roads. Strangely I did it in 5 including a stop. So relaxed because I arrived 3 hours early.

Yes, you have made quite alot of assumptions here "very busy" "get somewhere faster"

    mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

For what other reason do you want to go faster than the traffic will allow?

Oh, so you don't mind the cyclist taking the primary position?

Sorry, from your original post I assumed (that word again) that "a lone cyclist who uses the entire lane and holds the traffic up" was in some way restricting your progress.

Having re-read your original post, I can see now that you were merely asking for an explanation.

I hope others have satisfied your curiosity.
  • Bikes don't have to comply with construction and use regulations

Cyclists can't fit whatever they please, the bike has to comply with the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations.

Don't be silly. Cyclists don't need to obey any road traffic laws.

if the cycle is positioned in the middle of a single lane traffic, everyone is behind him or her
If the lane requires that position by the cyclist then the cars would not be able to pass regardless of the cyclist's position. Many car drivers do not understand this. Thus for their safety cyclists need to ride there.

OP I'm assuming you're asking as a motorist who has become irritated after following a cyclist. If you're driving on narrow city streets presumably the limit is 30 mph. The cyclist will be doing 10 mph?. For how far or for how long are you driving at a reduced speed. Realistically the delay will be a few seconds which is far less than the time spent waiting at junctions or due to congestion.
As a motorist I don't enjoy sharing the roads with cyclists but as I also cycle on the roads I understand why the primary position is used.
The fact that you've asked cyclists why they do this rather than assume they are wrong should be appreciated by cyclists.
Cyclists are entitled to control the lane for their safety. Motorists who don't understand or accept this are demonstrating their incompetence as drivers.
