you go to have a look and not to buy - "go on then might as well have a trolley, ooh that looks nice its only 99p, put a few in then, look at them mugs..." get to the checkout to find out somehow you've spent 50 quid eek'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0

Well the most basic beauty of Ikea shopping is that you can EXAMINE FIRST-HAND the vast majority of all the furniture - ie see the actual item in their massive showrooms, examine it, check the colour and use their free tape measures to double check how well it's likely to fit. (Obviously I dont mean you get to examine the actual flat-pack you'll probably be taking home, just the design/finish/construction.)
No picking an item from the Argos or other catalogue and HOPING it's anything like something you'd want in your home, or expect to survive more than a few hours - fallen for that TWICE now with Argos beds - and three missed collections isn't inefficiency, that's contempt - never again.
Of course I speak from the luxurious position of having gone from a 110 mile (55x2) commute to nearest Ikea, to just 7 miles with their Milton Keynes, ie Bletchley, store.
The savings on the 95p breakfast (and free Family card coffee) pays for the petrol, and of course you're right, it's so hard to leave empty handed even then.
Now if only they did 150cm UK 'King' width beds...
PS
And yes I'm sat at an Ikea desk (<£20 for a top & 4 legs); with an Ikea drawer (in sales for 75p); with a beech/castored Ikea computer stand <£5 in sale; next to an Ikea pegboard c£2; sat on an Ikea desk chair c£75 (the only item not really a good buy, it needed a different cushion, and was rapidly discontinued); lit by an Ikea desk lamp <£8; in a room with an Ikea bookcase and wardrobe; tossing stuff into an Ikea wastebin. If only .... I could sleep in an Ikea bed ....0 -
Another Ikea fan here - the Pax wardrobes (and the interior fittings) are brilliant, and look as good now as they did when we bought them 4 years ago. The same goes for the Billy bookcases - friends of ours have had theirs for over 10 years completely overloaded with books.
We also have a glass kitchen table from there, and some cheap and cheerful seats.
Examine the display models closely to see if they're of reasonable quality, but as other people have said at least you see the products before spending your hard earned money. The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0 -
Yep, I love Ikea too.
We have the Hemnes range in our bedroom and it's gorgeous. Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:

I Love Ikea! Most of the stuff in our house is Ikea nad we've never had a problem with any of it, unlike the flat pack Argos wardrobes we brought with us which didn't survive the move. I was glad to replace them anyway as the bottoms kept falling out of the drawers!
I would like to comment on the kitchens: we looked at Wickes, B&Q etc and found Ikea's by far the best. Basically becuase the inside cupboards come in a vast range of metric sizes, eg 40/50/60/80/100cm so you can really tailor the space you have well. Secondly, if we ever needed to replace a door for whatever reason, they are stll likely to have our design in stock. Thirdly, if we fancy a change we can be confident that we could pick ANY other door front design from their range and it would fit perfectly, thus giving us a full kitchen makeover for a great price!
I have found that the hinges on Ikea cupboard doors (inc wardrobes etc) are a lot more adjustable than some too, drawer insides are well made, fittings are strong (no gluing dowels!)
I also like the range of designs, if you don't do ultra modern you can get nice cottage-y looking things too.0 -
Wouldn't reccomend the Ektorp sofa range at all ours is only 2 years old and already needs replacing (its the corner sofa). The covers don't wah too good and we have already had them replaced once by Ikea for fading we went from the red to the blue and the blue are not as bad for fading but have still lost colour.
The base is also not of a very good standard the frame is pertruding through the base and wearing away the fabric covering it. Was very please with the comfort of it for about 18 months but now its not very comfy and at 800 quid I would expect it to last that bit longer.0 -

I hope no one minds me jumping on this thread. I've been renting furnished places for years but am moving to an unfurnished house in a couple of weeks, and was planning to get the essentials via Ikea. I'm in the right area to use the Ikea Shop Online! service and just wondered if anyone had any experience with it - how reliable was it, how long did it take for goods to be dispatched etc? As neither my partner nor I can drive, this seems the easiest option to get ikea furniture to the house.
Thanks

I've recently installed few wardrobes, my my honest opinion is that the quality of wood is fairly good, although I find the ffixtures and fittings need to be made extra secure as many of the hole, pre-drilled are a little big, so I usually wrap tape around all screws for a secure fit, then all is ok. The good thing about ikea is that on the outside it looks good.0

I have used the Ikea shop online three times now and so far so good, the first two orders were large and came with two people to carry them inside, the third order came by parcelforce. All have arrived when they said and been in good condition, my DH is an expert now at putting the things together and we have billy and benno in dining room and DD bedroom is now all ikea.
So I would highly recommend, only thing was I was going to get another benno cd tower on the last order but the delivery would have been more than buying several from the shop so delivery is good if buying a lot of heavy stuff or small/light stuff but not a mixture.0
