Moving to Dagenham

  • I may be wrong but as London gets more and more unaffordable I think that people will be looking more toward areas like Dagenham and Barking. I imagine that this in turn will push prices up.

I was brought up in Bethnal Green. Living in Bethnal Green meant that you were not well off. But look at the property prices in Bethnal Green now. And Shoreditch, Hoxton, Stoke Newington.

It cannot be said that Dagenham is pretty. However the Council are spending huge amounts of money in improving the area.

A major problem in the less well off London boroughs is that there is naff all for young people to do. But have a read of this

It is going to be a huge centre specifically for young people.
I think that Barking and Dagenham are the first London borough to be planning such a facility.

And there is the skills academy in Barking where young people can get qualifications in construction, learn to be a plumber, become a chef, hairdresser etc etc.

You may not find artisan bakeries, Starbucks or little independent shops. But you will find it is a borough that is investing in young people.

And it really does have some lovely parks...and a canoe club if that's your thing.
  • The Mardyke Estate is now called Orchard Village. Try looking at properties in South Hornchurch, Elm Park or Rainham.

Have a look at the " Heron Flight Estate " south Hornchurch. Houses are reasonably big, and it's a nice enough area too - very quiet but houses are towards the cheaper end of the scale for some reason.
