I think the reason London and the south east are more expensive than places like Stoke is because of supply and demand and the availability of good employment.
Lots of good employment in many places outside the SE. Dunno about Stoke but the first owner of my Audi A8 lived there, so it's clearly not some high-end employment desert.I see you haven't got a sense of humour.
Yes, that's how well you know me.Although my current location is expensive compared to many areas outside the south east it's probably the cheapest part of Surrey that's why I moved there from one of the most expensive.
Interestingly I live in one of the most expensive parts of my "grim" Northern city, which is one of the most expensive in the country. However you can get a nice 5 bed detached on a large plot for less than 7 figures,a 3 bed semi for sub £200k and (not in my area) terraces down as low as £50k if you're really not fussy.
As a result, I find recruiting easier than we do on sites in the SE (and in California, and Australia, etc, etc.) which works for me.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Haven't been to Stoke for a long time but did go there a few times in late 60s early 70s when potteries were still going and it was not bad. I'm sure there are plenty of good jobs up north and the really cheap areas are the most deprived. I used Stoke as Cell uses it as an example.
Just to let you know I wasn't being serious when I made the comment about Dover.
You can still get a 5 bed detached in a good plot for less than a million near me but you would need to spend over £300k probably nearer £400k to get a 3 bed semi. It would be good if we could move some of the demand from London and south east.0 -

Many jobs now can be done from almost anywhere. My team is across four continents and pay between areas is equalising rapidly.the really cheap areas are the most deprived.
Possibly, or maybe just off the beaten track.Just to let you know I wasn't being serious when I made the comment about Dover.
Ah OK. Maybe I read too much into it, and your correction really helps. Thanks. You can still get a 5 bed detached in a good plot for less than a million near me
One four doors down from me just went for £1.7m so maybe things are closer at the high end?but you would need to spend over £300k probably nearer £400k to get a 3 bed semi. It would be good if we could move some of the demand from London and south east.
Yes, that's just silly money for what's close to "first rung".
We have a lot of land, and lots of towns and cities that are very affordable and "roomy", but the UK suffers from the "London effect". This is a *very* British disease: most other countries have a number of cities that are close to their #1 in size, but not the UK.
I guess HMG see the fix as being the "Northern Powerhouse" but TBH just showing people who think it's "close to London or forget it" that there are significant opportunities elsewhere is also key.
Whenever anyone new from our SE headquarters visits me up "in't North" they say "wow" a lot. We're in a good place in oh so many ways,I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

In other labour related news the leadership contest seems to be about who can turn back time the furthest (with Owen thrashing corbyn by going all the way back to the inrdustrial revolution vs corbyns paltry striking 70s) and who can pledge the biggest random unfunded expenditure in something (I think owen has found 500billion to spend on fair working hard families or something)
I should add that all the time travel and random number generating is soundly backed up by legal challenge upon legal challenge and appeal.
Don't know about you but this is clearly the party for me that will take a united and independent Britain forward into the ever globalizing and competitive world, simply by rewriting economic theory and proving once again that socialism is the way forward (a lesson demonstrated again and again in nations that chose to lean left)Left is never right but I always am.0 -

I think that 1) Venezuela is about to pop, 2) the left will still think the whole sorry experiment is worth repeating in another country.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Clean sweep for Corbyn supporters in Labour NEC electionMomentum, the Corbyn-supporting grassroots campaign group, also welcomed the results, tweeting: "Well done to the 6 left-wing candidates elected on to Labour's NEC! Thank you to everyone who voted for them."
