You can set programs to save all their files in d: but you have to install it manually and point it towards that drive. But if you have an SSD then you would be better saving programs on the SSD so they load quicker and use secondary drive to for big files you don't use all the time like music and videos.

Also you can instruct your browser where to save or you can set it to ask where you want to save the files every time so that you can put videos in d:/videos and music in d:/music etc.

ok create a folder called downloads , when you download , don,t just say "save" , click save as , and point it to d/downloads

programme files , correct they have to be on c: , d: is for files and data , not programmes

Oh that sucks...that means I made a very big mistake with my new build.

So for example, I'm trying to redownload my steam library which exceeds the SSD capacity. What do i do?
  • Move all steam library to the hard drive.
There is a reason because you have another hard drive.
SSD is designed to start application quickly. That's why you have only 256GB.
Hard Drive is where you store your data, like media files. SSD only for programs! :)

I can create folders but the downloads and saves default to the C drive.

Downloads and saves from which browsers and applications?

Chrome allows me to specify a different download location, and also has the option to ask before saving in case I want a different folder.

Ok guys, thanks for all the help and advice.

This defeats the purposes of an SSD drive.

So it looks like i'm just going to have to manage as is.
  • yes it does , a ssd is for storing your OS and the necessary files to make programms run , a data drive is for storing your music , films and photos etc.

in IE (same for other browsers) if you are d/loading a file , it will save to c:/downloads by default , instead of clicking save , click save AS and point it to your new directory (d:/downloads) same with piccis or music etc

in programs eg Microsoft word , not save , save as and point it to d:/

most of those setting have been preconfigured in win 10 , that's why I asked if you were going to upgrade

Generally, 'Save as...' allows you to save your files wherever you want.
I don't know win10 was preconfigured to do it. Thank you :)
  • yes go into all settings (bottom right) click on system/storage and it offers a few setting for you to change
