Do I need certifictate for new electric socket

I need to get some minor electrical work done in one of the bedrooms.

There is a double socket which is very old. I want this replaced with a modern one, and also a new double socket fitted.

Should the electrician who does this supply a certificate for the new socket? I just want to make sure I know what to ask for when I get someone to do this.

I would ask for a minor electrical works certificate.

Are there specific qualifications the electrician would need to issue this certificate?

It all seems to have change since I last had electrical work done.

Nope, any competent person an issue a minor work certificate, but a qualified electrician will know if it’s minor or notifiable and should issue the correct certificate.

I would advise using a qualified electrician, especially as you mentioned the ‘very old’ double socket... some additional investigation may be required as it could be connected with ‘very old’ wiring.

Thanks. I had all the wiring checked before I bought the house, so believe it to be OK.

What is the difference between a 'competent person' and a qualified electrician? Should the new socket be registered with the council?

A competent person can do the job but a qualified person has been assessed and has a qualification to do the job. You'd be looking for an electrician who has completed his 17th Edition, or if you want to be really up to date, someone who is conversant with amendment 3
  • I'm a competent person. I changed most of the plug sockets and light switches/dimmers in my house.

Would I pay me? Hell no. I'm not qualified to do it!

    That's the difference :)

So a 'competent person' may not really be competent, then. They are not qualified, and could be anybody.

Who checked the wiring in the first place?? A competent person or a qualified electrician??

You may find that a qualified electrician will only take on the job and provide a cert if all the wiring relating to that socket is to regulation standard. Could open a whole can of worms

On the form it says his name, and next to 'Position' it says 'electrician'. The report was then countersigned by someone else whose position is recorded as 'qualified supervisor'.

I'm not an electrician but I hold 17th edition and have done the periodic inspection and testing course. I'd perhaps look for an electrician rather then an individual waving pieces of paper around.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
