The problem with those sayings is every one of them has an equal & opposite saying. Buy when others are fearful etc...

But my own view on Oil (not yours I know) is that it's unthinkable it won't rise again strongly at some point. I may be wrong but I'm prepared to bet on it.
Wouldn't you rather invest in something for the long term at what you consider to be a good price?

I'm not sure what you mean, that's exactly what I meant buy putting say £10k into oil..? A long-term investment in something I think is currently way underpriced.

I agree. It depends on whether you're ramping up your investment in blacksmiths as the automobile starts selling in numbers or buying auto makers that can make tanks when the war starts.

I think oil is in a long term decline. That doesn't make me right of course.

Ultimately you have to be in something if you have assets. My problem with commodity bets is you have no cushion to the down side.

Better to buy Shell or BP than oil directly I think. You at least get a dividend to offset your risk.

It was your use of the word 'punt', I thought you meant a short term bet than a long term investment. Would you get a dividend on that oil ETF?

I do own both of those as it goes. My investing style tends to be a mish-mash of individual (generally high-yield) shares & some funds or stuff like the Oil ETF I alluded to earlier. Mainly boring stuff :)

Ah gotcha. Should have said "long-term punt" !

Good luck anyway, I think that we are all going to need a bit of that over the next few days/weeks/months, lets hope it doesn't stretch to years, just as well I had the long term in mind anyway.

Trading on both the S&P and Nasdaq have now been halted.

    Nasdaq opened 11% down.

The NYSE is also taking "rule 48" to limit volatility. Whatever the hell rule 48 is.

I've been amazed by the lack of reporting on the china stock market falls. A drop of nearly 2000 points from 5200 to 3200 (ish) since June is incredible & yet barely makes mainstream news (until today perhaps....)
