I don't have a problem with subsidising renewables that benefit everyone. I'm opposed to subsidizing renewables that benefit just the owner of the renewables via reduced electricity bills.
    Hmmm....
So if you get the panels in I'm guessing your moral high ground will stop you claiming the FiT? Or will it not be viable without it?

I've no intention of claiming the fit. If things go to plan, I'll be installing evacuated tubes for space heating and hot water and 4kw panels split over East/west roofs. All DIY and all paid for by me. I'm also in the process of fitting a rainwater harvesting system and I've already fitted internal wall insulation. None of it was subsidised by anyone else. I pay my own way in life, thanks.

Good for you, just make sure you inform your DNO of your intensions as every install whether professional or DIY has to be logged, you never know...they may not allow a 4kWp system.

I have to ask, what's your take on the RaR schemes? Are you opposed to people who cannot afford their own system(unlike yourself) getting "free" panels and the FiT being claimed by the scheme owner.

and the usual posters drone on about how many kwh they produced that day and how much money they saved on electricity and how much unused solar they diverted into their water tanks. :p

I must admit I do find it a bit odd that some people give a daily running commentary about how their Solar PV system is performing but each to their own and at least they are discussing it with like minded people.

However, I have never understood why someone who hasn't got Solar PV, or intends to get it, feels the need to infest Solar PV related threads with their views. I can only assume that they must be compensating for something or other.

I agree with both of your points. Not sure how the second applies to this thread?

1 I have pv purely as an investment, combined with a great deal on an electric car due to a 5000 subsidy it was a no brainer
2 I originally looked for solar pv info on the in my home and energy boards before finding it here
3 When I did get here I got very useful info on strings etc that my installer had overlooked.
4 Now I come here regularly, try and pass on some of the knowledge I got and while here also look at other green threads that take my interest that otherwise I would never see.
5 I don't see the board moving so quickly that threads drop off the first page if you don't visit every day.

As far as I can see it ain't broken so why fix it?
    I think....

    Taxpayers fund the NHS.

The NHS uses the money to fund drugs purchases to cure people of dire illnesses.

A few taxpayers think that they will invest in drug companies thinking at the same time that their investment is ethical because the benefits of drug research reach out to the whole population.

Of course they invest with the hope that will receive fair capital growth and a dividend from their investment.

Then an aggrieved little man comes along who is outraged that the investors are turning profit from that investment, "How dare they!", he says "The investors not should profit at the expense of the poorest in our society. The investor's behaviour cannot hardly be ethical."

  • I love my solar panels. Nothing better than a bit of sunshine, seeing what's being generated and then banging on the washing machine for free !!! Use the OWL monitor to show generation and usage. Great tool & fun to use.

I frequent the energy board now and again for varying reasons and there's hardly any threads to do with solar. If there is any they soon become engulfed by the vast amounts of threads either by people moaning about their supplier or about switching.
Leaving the solar on the G & E forum I at least can give my twopenneth and hopefully help someone shave a few quid off their solar system, whether they are claiming the FiT or not.
I'd like to think myself and my fellow pv nerds have helped people save thousands, by moving it I believe that would end. What would be the point of a moneysaving site if that was to happen?
So why fix what aint broke?
