Because it's almost always somebody's fault. And if you don't learn how and why something happened, how do you reduce the chance of it happening again?

If you mean me, I've made nothing up. I've merely commented on what the OP - the only person who was there - has told us.

He told us he can't remember the exact details and the preceding few seconds. He also told us he remembered travelling down his "training route", a stretch of road he knows well and travels regularly, at ~25mph, and that there were no other road users involved. He also told us that the pothole in question hadn't been there a week before.

You don't believe you're negligent, but you don't recall the actual incident.

Well, quite. A road user failed to take into account clearly visible road conditions and - as a direct result - crashed and was injured.

If the road user was paying more attention and travelling at a speed more suitable to his vehicle and that road surface, then would the incident have happened? So...?

and doesnt know what happened. So how do you know what did or didnt happen.
recollection is often poor, especially with a chunk of missing memory.

OK, so he WAS riding well within the limits of his vehicle given the road surface.

Why did he fall off, then? Aliens beamed him up to their flying saucer, scanned his brain, wiped his memories of the incident, then beamed him back down again...?

Well as you have said before. It was a route he has ridden many times. I would expect the riding style wouldnt change much week on week.
Never heard of debris on the road, animals, cross winds etc.
    Who knows. certainly not you.
